Under current anti-terror laws you can be locked up and repeatedly questioned by police for up to 28 days without being charged. You might not even be told why you are there.
For the past 10 months, Liberty has campaigned to stop the the Government extending detention without charge from 28 days to 42. On Wednesday 11 June 2008, the proposal was passed in the House of Commons, by just 9 votes. But our campaign is far from over, and your support is more important than ever.
Our fight to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of everyone in our society now moves to the House of Lords. Throughout the rest of 2008, we will continue to campaign to ensure that these dangerous and counter-productive proposals do not become law.
There is no evidence to support an extension of pre-charge detention. You can help us make sure the Government has a fight on their hands before implementing this counter-productive, unjust and dangerous measure.
The ad, which features the voice of renowned actor Simon Callow, was shown in cinemas around the country for a short time only. It was made for us by DNR Films.
The UK already has the longest period of pre-charge detention in the western world, and there is no evidence that a further extension will make us any safer.
In 2005, Liberty campaigned successfully to block Government proposals to raise the then limit of 14 days to 90 days. With your help, we can stop them again.
Who I'd like to meet: You! The more support we have for the campaign, the more we can do to make the Government listen.

This is a great campaign - it's unbelievable that you could be locked up for a month without even being told what you had done wrong. And the Government is talking about making it 42 days?! Grrr.
