The track "New Way Through Happiness" from my self titled CD is on 2 benefit CD's...Concert For A Cause 7 & Mountaingrown 6, available @ galleryofsound.com.
Charles Havira’s eponymous EP reads like an American music compendium: a little Nina Simone, a little Bob Dylan and a little Aaron Copland. The Scranton musician takes those disparate influences, and a host of others, and fuses them into a scrappy, soulful seven-track gem, backed by no fewer than 13 musicians.
Havira crafts songs that run the gamut of folk, R&B and roots, sort of a musical Ellis Island, but replacing the tired, hungry and poor with timorous acoustic, fat-bottom bass and mournful fiddle.
Havira knows how to kick out the grooves, like on the blues-infused “New Way Through Happiness,” dripping with Motown stabs of brass from Nick Driscoll, Dan Wolfe and Dave Davies, and meat-and-potatoes percussion from A.J. Jump.
Havira has a quirky tenor that, oddly enough, sounds like Viggo Mortensen as hepcat killer, delivering lines like, “Check your machine for signs of life/go on and tell yourself you can make it through these heartaches I know all too well/let me show you a new way through happiness.”
But for every hot lick laid down, there’s a haunting spiritual buoyed by Appalachian strings from Hank Roberts, Coleman Smith, Judy Hyman and Max Buckholtz, riding the high harmonies of Havira and Jen Middaugh.
