FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nashville Born Broadway Actor to Perform in Benefit Performance at Emmanuel Family Life Center
Although he has performed in three of the most celebrated productions in Broadway theatre history: the Lion King, Jesus Christ Superstar and Smokey Joe’s Café, Nashvillian, Charles Holt still finds time to give back to his community.
“My music is a gift from God and I want to share it with the world,” Holt said in a recent interview.
Holt will perform in a one-night only special dinner/jazz concert on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at 6 p.m. at the Emmanuel Family Life Center, 303 Fairview Lane in Clarksville. Prior to the performance, there will be a silent auction, and all proceeds from the auction will go to the center which is operated by First Missionary Baptist Church. In celebration of his gospel roots, Holt will make a special appearance, Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 6 p.m., at the First Missionary Baptist Church. His latest CD “I Am” will be on sale both nights.
Holt, who has also appeared in Law & Order: Criminal Intent and All My Children, starred in a one man show based on author Richard Wright’s novel Black Boy. This production premiered on hundreds of college and university campuses across America. In addition, Holt was the first African American to play the role of “Rocky’ in the European tour of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The event on November 20th is limited to 60 people. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event on November 19th is free and open to the public. Along with First Missionary Baptist Church and Emmanuel Family Life Center, Holt’s appearances are being sponsored by Music is Spirit, Kendall’s Group and Emmanuel Wellness Spa. WORKSHOPS & MASTER CLASSES~~
While employed at IBM, I was required to attend classes as a part of completing the company’s marketing curriculum for sales representatives. I always passed the ‘customer simulation’ part of the class with flying colors; however it was a different story when it came to the standardized, multiple-choice testing. Many times my passing the course and the longevity of my career were spared by the ‘customer simulation’ evaluation. When I began entertaining and performing professionally, I found that the scales weighed in the opposite direction, and therefore in my favor. I realized that the creative side of my brain was more dominant than the logical, however the business of ‘show business’ is, though often taken lightly and neglected, is essential to the livelihood and longevity of a perfo rmer artist’s success and career. As a result I have created a vehicle that combines both; the ability to acquire and retain valuable information about ‘the business of show’, and the ability to put what has been learned to practical use, all in an environment and platform that is supportive and available to ignite the seed of authentic, creative genius that lies within each of us.
It is important for the performing artist to know and be able to deliver the notes when singing a song. It is fundamental for a dancer to know the choreography and perform the steps as given. It is imperative for an actor to know the lines to the script. However, if what is being performed is minus the very essence of the message, the mark has been missed. In workshops I share my insight, experience and wisdom as a performer in a way that will allow students to understand the basics of building a career in the entertainment business. Hitting the note bang on is expected, just as it is with an actor saying his lines, but bringing to life each note of a Sondheim ballad is going beyond; and the bottom line to always hitting the mark in performing is to always, always, always tell the story. Playing at the top of your game is much more than a mediocre performance. It is all about excellence! It is th e one characteristic everybody wants to see and experience, whether it’s an actor/actress delivering a line from “Romeo & Juliet”, or quoting one of Aunt Ester’s fiery, convicted monologues in August Wilson’s “Gem of the Ocean”, or dancing to Alvin Ailey’s breathtaking choreographic rendition of “Revelations”.
My highest desire is to impress upon students the importance of understanding what it means to be a performing artist and who you are as a performing artist. Knowing the business is as vital as trusting one’s own intuition. And it is the performer’s responsibility to be fined tuned and tuned in to the transformative value that his/her performance and presence can bring to the audience.
All the best,
CHARLES HOLT.........

Music and Storytelling have always been a vital part of Charles’ life. However, despite growing up in the shadows of the Grand Ole Opry and country music in Nashville, a grandmother who insisted upon teaching him church hymns as a child, and being surrounded by a buffet of characters and self-proclaimed griots, Charles never aspired to be a performing artist. He dreamed of one day playing professional football. After graduating college, Charles worked out for several NFL scouts as defensive back and kick return specialist, but in spite of his valiant efforts and persistence he wasn’t drafted. He then pursued a career in Corporate America, and after two successful years as a sales representative with IBM, Charles left to spearhead a regional office of another large company. A year from the date he started, the company released him.
It wasn’t until a friend saw his potential as a performing artist that Charles’ love for music and the stage began to unfold. In July1996, led by intuition, Charles left the comforts of living in the South for the bright lights of Broadway. He moved to New York with $400 in his pocket and a heart full of dreams, knowing that something greater was awaiting his arrival.
Charles has starred in some of the most celebrated and spectacular productions in American theatre history including Jesus Christ Superstar, Smokey Joe’s Café, an the Lion King. He was the first African-American to play the role of ‘Rocky’ in the European tour of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He adds guest starring and lead roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, All My Children, Anne B. Real, the award winning independent film (Universal Home Video), and the thought provoking comedy, Ed’s Trip. For the past eight seasons, he has received national acclaim and rave reviews for his 20-character portrayal and performance of his one-man stage play Black Boy, based on the life of noted author Richard Wright. He has entertained and enlightened sold-out audiences on some of the country’s most prestigious college and university campuses and top national venues, including The John F. Kennedy Center.
Spring 2009 will mark the international tour of his highly anticipated one-man show, The Smoke King, based on the life of W.E.B. Du Bois. He is currently penning, What Aunt Creasie Said, a one-man storytelling event with music chronicling the birth of the Lake Providence community, his life growing up in the South and his transition from athletics into performing arts and the stage. He is co-creating, with Dr. Michael Beckwith, a one-man stage play based on the life of George Washington Carver, and will soon begin touring regional theatres with his most recent work, America, The Black, The Beautiful, a one-man play with original music and multimedia.
Charles hosts seminars and workshop on campuses around the country and continues to expand as a philanthropist to correctional centers and creative arts centers around the world. He is the recipient of the 2006 BSA Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award for his outstanding loyalty and dedication to his alma mater, Rhodes College, and in 2008 inducted into Cambridge Who’s Who among Executives, Professionals, and Entrepreneurs.
Charles is a recording artist, signed with (AMI) Agape Media International. His debut album, “I Am” is an eclectic crafting of songs anchored in love, healing and freedom and will be featured at his inaugural tour season of his ‘Sole’ Music Concert Series, premiering Fall 2008.
The Voice That Matters, Charles’ riveting and remarkable non-fiction book and literary landmark about his journey in finding his own unique voice and life purpose will be published in Summer 2009.
