About me:
I’m not exactly sure where to start. A whole bunch of stuff has happened to me since May. Maybe the best place is at the beginning. I’m a farm boy who had a dream of becoming an author. In a way, it’s that simple. In another way, it was a really crazy journey from Point A to Point B. My family has been in the farming business for over 100 years. My mom, dad, brothers, sisters and I are all involved in the day to day workings of the business, which keeps us all busy, and farming has been good to all of us. I like farming and, like the rest of the Pero’s, it is in my blood. But the urge for storytelling has been in me since day one; it’s something I inherited from my grandmother, who loved to write. Since the business keeps me on the road and I spend a lot of time in the fields overseeing the farming process, I have a lot of time to think. I think about my characters, their stories, the plots and serial killers.
My bad guys are all serial killers -- really twisted serial killers. My two main characters, Frank and Vinny, have the thankless job of figuring out the killers’ profiles and going after these guys. I came up with The Twisted Killer Series and wrote four novels in the series, The Maze Murderer, Tainted Blood, Torn Apart and Black Ribbon, before finally finding a publisher. Finding a publisher was kinda tough. Later on, I’ll write more about that. Finally, SterlingHouse Publisher, Inc. came through for me and I landed a four book contract. Since I signed with SterlingHouse, I can hardly believe the great things that have happened.
In May 2007, Publishers Weekly reviewed The Maze Murderer and gave it a great review. Also in May I was on the cover of Publishers Weekly. Then I was a featured author at the BEA in New York. (It’s the mother of trade shows for books.) I had an amazing time there. I also was the host of The Killer Mind: An Author’s Perspective which was filmed at the BEA. (The BEA is another journey that I will write more about later on.)
Anyways, after the BEA, SterlingHouse gave me a major book launch party on South Beach at the Hotel Victor, and three people from PW came, including the associate publisher. The day after the party, I did my first book signing at Books and Books, where around 200 books sold in about an hour. Then I gave my first lecture at Murder on the Beach Bookstore, along with a book signing and wine and cheese party. It was pretty cool.
In between book signings, I did a lot of radio interviews, my movies rights got sold and I’m scheduled to do a television show next year. I’m also going to be the featured speaker in the private Governor’s Club at the Mar-A-Lago resort in March 2008.
All and all, the pain of writing and rewriting, the countless hours of research and the long search for a publisher have been worth it. I’m finally getting more comfortable with this author thing.
