The Charleston Police Department is made up of some of the most highly trained, well-qualified, and self motivated men and women in the law enforcement profession. We are a proactive police department that takes "protect and serve" very seriously! Last year our officers responded to over 70,000 911 calls in Charleston. We will be accepting these pre-applications beginning immediately for a test that will take place in the Spring of 2010.

Who I'd like to meet:

We would like to meet men and women between the ages of 18 and 35. You must be a high school graduate or have a GED. You must pass a written test, physical ability test, and psychological assessment to enter on duty here. The physical ability test consists of the following: 18 properly executed push ups within one minute 27 properly executed sit ups within one minute 1.5 mile run within 15 minutes, 20 seconds. The sit and reach test has been eliminated. If you are interested, start practicing now for the physicial ability test. YOU CAN DO IT IF YOU WANT IT BAD ENOUGH!! Effective July 1, 2009Starting Salary Range - $33,953.65-$37,349.02 Pre-applications are being accepted for the position of full time Police Officer with the Charleston WV Police Department. We are a proactive, progressive law enforcement agency whose mission is to partner with all segments of the community. We provide for the general protection, safety, and well being of the residents, businesses, and visitors of City of Charleston, West Virginia. Our Police Officers' duties include answering 911 calls to protect life and property, enforcement of laws, the deterrence, prevention, and investigation of criminal activity, routine patrol, traffic enforcement, specialized assignments, community outreach and general calls for service. Selection Process The Charleston Civil Service Commission will conduct an examination to establish an eligibility list for the position of Police Officer. The next examination will be in the Spring of 2010. Candidates must present a valid driver’s license to gain entrance to the exam. To participate in the selection process each candidate must submit an application, possess a valid driver’s license, be a U.S. citizen, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be at least 18 years of age at the time of application. Applicants must complete and pass the physical ability exam, written examination, a background investigation to include a truth verification examination and neighborhood interviews, psychological examination, drug screen, medical examination, reference check, oral interview, as well as a fingerprint, employment and criminal history check.
