My greatest influences in my life are my parents and extended family. Musically, I have been influenced by Eddie Jefferson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, John Hendricks, Al Jarreau, Nancy Wilson, Kurt Elling, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Cannonball Adderley.
Charles Turner III
Jazz vocalist Charles Turner III was born in Los Angeles, California. Music has always been a big part of the Turner family. Charles love of music began at the age of two.
Charles is currently a junior attending Berklee College of Music in Boston as the recipient of a full tuition scholarship.
Charles Recently Received 2nd Place and the Public Prize, at the Music Village Festivals 4th International Young Jazz Voice Competition in Brussels, Belgium.
Spring of 2008 Charles studied at the Jazz and Rock Schule in Freiburg, Germany. Summer of 2008 he was a Semi- Finalist at the MONTUREUX Jazz Festival Shure Voice Competition. Charles has performed in various countries such as Germany, Switzerland, France, and Spain.
In May of 2008 Charles performed at Carnegie Hall with Bobby McFerrin, where be participated in the Young Artist Instant Opera.
He is a member of The Pat Metheny Ensemble and also participated in various other advance jazz ensembles. Charles performed in the Maggie Scott’s Jazz Vocal Series and Singer’s Night and with Marcus Miller. Charles was one of eight singers selected to be a part of the 2005 and 2006 Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble where he performed at many Grammy functions. This honor included the opportunity to record at Capitol Records in the infamous Studio A where many other artists such as Nat King Cole have previously recorded. These recordings consisted of jazz material, which were performed live during Grammy functions and also sold via Capital Records retail distribution. In 2006, the ensemble recorded a promotional clip of Brand New Day; by Sting, which they performed, live on CBS The Early Show. Charles had the distinct pleasure of attending Hamilton High School Academy of Music in Los Angeles where he studied musical theater and voice from 2002 until he graduated in 2006. He had the privilege of performing in many musicals during these years including Chicago, Some Like It Hot and Kiss Me Kate, just to name a few. Charles was a member of the Chamber Singers, which won the 2005 Heritage of Gold Festival in New York City and the prestigious 2006 American Directors Choral Association Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah, amongst many others. Charles also became a member of the six-time Downbeat Magazine award winning Vocal Jazz ensemble. During his three-year tenure with the Vocal Jazz ensemble, they won at many jazz festivals including The Monterey Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival and Fullerton Jazz Festival. In addition, Charles competed as a solo artist and won the 2005 Best Jazz Vocalist at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the 2006 Best Jazz Vocalist at the Reno and Fullerton Jazz Festivals. Charles also performed at the 2005 IAJE in Long Beach, California where he sang a solo on Please Send Me Someone To Love. During his experiences at Hamilton High School Academy of Music, Charles had the opportunity to sing on stage with Al Jarreau, Jon Hendricks, Kurt Ellling, George Benson, Oscar Peterson, Dave Koz, Ron McCurdy and Kirk Whalum. He is a very fun, loving, passionate, young man whose goal during his lifetime is to touch as many people as possible with the gift of song.
