Charley Harper is an artist/illustrator who lives and works in Cincinnati. Born on a farm in rural West Virginia Charley was first inspired to paint when he saw the delicate circle lines water striders created on top a pond. He left the farm for Cincinnati School of Art in 1940 where he met his beloved, Edie. After receiving a traveling art scholarship Charley and Edie wed and spent six months touring the country—drawing, painting and taking in nature. Back in Cincinnati Charley accepted a job illustrating for Ford Times magazine where he created his renowned bird silkscreens. The images in the magazine became so popular readers began requesting to purchase the incredible illustrations. Edie and Charley set to work in their studio mixing colors and printing the intricate birds. In addition to Ford, Charley illustrated books for "Betty Crocker's Dinner for Two", "Golden Book's Giant Book of Biology" and the elusive "Animal Kingdom". He also illustrated ads for Morten Salt, Libby's Pineapple and Proctor & Gamble. In the 1980s Charley was commissioned by the U.S. National Park Service to produce a series of posters. His newest poster is for Cornell's Lab of Ornithology that was completed in 2005. Look for a book of his life's work coming out soon in the Spring of 2007! Designed by Todd Oldham, Published by AMMO.

I feel compelled to leave a small note... I TREASURE Todd Oldham's compilation of Charley's work and life!! I work at a Barnes & Noble and had ordered it quite some time ago... was SO HAPPY the day it arrived! I had met Charley a few times when I lived in Cincinnati... and he was so sweet to my, then small, children. Interestingly, on the day of his passing to heaven, I was visiting at the Sharon Woods Nature store purchasing a few items for my collection. His beautiful art will live in my heart forever!!
