photobucket

Supersound is Charli's big band, his pet project! The emergence of Supersound as a major musical experience is underscored by its latest recording "Intrinsic Evolution".

Charli Persip has been the uncrowned king of modern big band drumming for over half a century. He is among the very few who created the approach for driving post-swing large ensembles, and he continues to set the pace with Supersound. Through its diversity of moods and its focus on young writers and players, Supersound also finds Persip taking the lead in mentoring the stars of the future, much as he was mentored by Dizzy Gillespie. This is a band that covers a lot of musical territory, all well. - Bob Blumenthal

"Intrinsic Evolution" is the fourth album recorded by this truly suburb band. The first was recorded on the Stash label and entitled Charli Persip and Superband; the second is Superband 11, recorded on Soul Note. Tracks from these recordings are currently being played on jazz stations throughout the world, especially in the Greater New York area, which is home base for the band.

The musical direction of Supersound ( formally known as Superband) presents the total spectrum of African American music, commonly referred to as jazz; from Bebop era to the present and beyond. Fans of all ages have thoroughly enjoyed listening to and yes! Even dancing to the music of Supersound.

Supersound's library consists of unique arrangements on both standards and original compositions by some of todays most outstanding writers. The individual sound of the band stems from its concept: First, an excellent rhythm section with a small band feeling ( not the tight woodchopping sound that is heard in most big bands of today). Next, all the horns know the melody and harmonic structure of each tune, as well as their written parts. Thus, the band portrays the true drama in the music while maintaining the basic jazz big band traditions. Finally, Supersound's concept crosses the threshold of musical transformation with Charli Persip's drumming, unique in itself. All these attributes make Supersound a TRUE jazz orchestra.

Sounds LikeA Drum lesson with Charli. Now available through Hudson Music.

Salaam
- bismillah
I was blessed to see you some years ago in L.A. with Basie and then I was amazed to see you in New Orleans with Billy Eckstine whom I love dearly.
I mean, here is Mr.B, a singer, with a drummer as Musical Director at the best hotel in New Orleans and I am sitting there thinking, "Man, B is bad, he brought his own drummer - Charlie Persip - and you glued that hotel band together like it was your own and B was smiling and handsome as ever!"
