We're your friendly, local library, here to serve you! The majority of our patrons come from the Houston Boro & Chartiers Township areas, but we have others from Canonsburg, Strabane, Washington, and even Allegheny County! All are welcome, whether "local" or not, and we're working on finding ways to reach those who can't come to us. That "mission" is why we're here on MySpace, and now we're on FaceBook, too! If you have additional suggestions for making this outreach possible, please feel free to
email
us!
Music
Audiobooks are music to my ears! ;) Through an online friend, I've learned of a couple great sites. The first is Project Gutenberg - the good folks there were the first to produce FREE ebooks, and are currently working on an
audiobook project. The other is
LibriVox. There (to quote the description on the website) "LibriVox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain and release the audio files back onto the net. Our goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books." I love free stuff - especially books! - don't you?
Of course, we do have audiobooks of our own - over 550 books on cassette and an ever expanding collection of books on CD, not to mention a selection of rotating CDs (these change quarterly).
Don't forget about the "new kids on the block" - playaways are here! Now that we've stepped into the 21st century, in addition to our audiobooks on cassette and on CD, we've got a small but growing number of playaways. (For your convenience, we also sell sets of earbuds at the circulation desk.) If you're unfamiliar with playaways and how they work, you can follow this link for a better explanation than any I could give:
What is a playaway? If you happen to be interested in my thoughts on them, view my
blog entry ;-)
Movies
We've got them! We offer a large selection of movies on VHS and now have nearly 400 on DVD. Up to 10 movies can be borrowed in a visit, and they circulate for one week. Be careful not to get too carried away, though...late fees are $1.00 per movie per day.

Television
This seems the ideal place to point out that a couple of current TV shows first "came to life" in books! We've got the show Dexter
(which originally aired on Showtime) on CBS, based on the books by
Jeff Lindsay, and ABC offers
The Women's Murder Club
(based on the
James Patterson series
).
And this is not TV, exactly, I'll take this opportunity to point you to a YouTube video of a recent program at
Heritage Library.
Books
We don't mean to brag, but sometimes we just can't help it! ;-) We're quite proud of our collection of large print books, and we want everyone to know it! These aren't just for senior citizens however...our large print collection contains a number of options to suit a variety of reading preferences.
It isn't only our large print section that offers variety...We try to have something for everyone - and the choices are always changing (just a little)! If you can't find what you're looking for, we can help! If we don't have the title you want, and it isn't too new (published this year), we can request it from other libraries in the state through the Access PA system.
If available, it will be shipped to us for you to pick up.
If you're the type who is more interested in newspapers or magazines than books, well, we can help you with that, too! In addition to the
magazines that we receive each month, we've also got a new resource, and searching the news has just gotten easier...If you follow this link to
NewsBank, you'll be asked to enter your CHCL library card number, and then you're on your way! From there, you can easily search both the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Sure, you can do that from their websites, but NewsBank also offers you the option of searching more than 25 magazines - many go back to the 90's but one can be searched as far back as 1986! Pretty cool, eh?
Heroes
Are you a Library Lover?
It's easier than ever to show your support and be a hero to the library! Consider honoring someone special...You might honor an anniversary, thank a co-worker, donate a graduating student's favorite book, or present a memorial. If you prefer, you can donate on-line by visiting our wishlist at Amazon. A nameplate will be placed in the book acknowledging your generosity.
You may find this difficult to believe, but we have need of things other than books, too. On the office-supply side of things, stamps for letters and postcards are always needed, as are business sized envelopes and reams of paper (white or colored). Items that are used on a daily basis are needed as well...things like wetwipes for cleaning the computer keyboards. Granted, these are all little things, but added up over the course of the year, they take a bite out of the library budget!
You can also be a hero to our community! The patrons of the Chartiers-Houston Library help their neighbors in a number of ways. Thanks to the Lions Club, we have collection boxes for old eye glasses and empty ink cartridges and the library is also a collection point for non-perishables for area food banks. As always, we continue to gather toiletries for the Washington Women's Shelter and over the next couple of months, we’ll be having craft-a-thons to benefit the WWS and other local shelters.
Not too long ago, we expanded our community outreach and are proud to say that continue to be a drop off center for Project Linus, a volunteer organization that provides blankets to traumatized children in our area and throughout the country. Be sure to check out this blog entry for a pic of one such blanket!
