Chartiers-Houston Library's Interests
|
| General | | | |
We're your friendly, local library, here to serve you! The majority of our patrons come from the Houston Boro & Chartiers Township areas, but we have others from Canonsburg, Strabane, Washington, and even Allegheny County! All are welcome, whether "local" or not, and we're working on finding ways to reach those who can't come to us. Please feel free to
email
us with suggestions for making this possible! | | Music
Audiobooks are music to my ears! ;-) A few months ago, I learned of Project Gutenberg - have you heard of it? They were the first to produce FREE ebooks, and are currently working on an
audiobook project. I thought this would be a good place to include the link. Of course, we dohave audiobooks of our own - over 600 books on cassette and an ever expanding collection of books on CD, not to mention a selection of rotating CDs (these change quarterly). And don't forget, playaways are now here! Now that we've stepped into the 21st century, in addition to our audiobooks on cassette and on CD, we've got a small but growing number of playaways. (For your convenience, we also sell sets of earbuds and spare batteries at the circulation desk.) If you're unfamiliar with playaways and how they work, you can follow this link for a better explanation than any I could give:
What is a playaway?
| | Movies | | | | We've got them! We offer a large selection of movies on VHS and now have more than 200 on DVD. Up to 10 movies can be borrowed in a visit - they must be checked out on an adult card - and they circulate for one week. Be careful not to get too carried away, though...late fees are $1.00 per movie per day. The list directly below is a list of our movies on DVD

| | Television | | | | This seems the ideal place to point out that a couple of current TV shows first "came to life" in books! We've got the show Dexter
(which originally aired on Showtime) on CBS, based on the books by
Jeff Lindsay, and ABC offers
The Women's Murder Club
(based on the
James Patterson series
).
And this is not TV, exactly, but we do enjoy checking out the YouTube vlog from
Matthews Library. | | Books | | | | We don't mean to brag, but sometimes we just can't help it! ;-) We're quite proud of our collection of large print books, and we want everyone to know it! These aren't just for senior citizens however (but you could say that this link is:
PA Department of Aging
)...our large print collection contains a number of options to suit a variety of reading preferences.
It isn't only our large print section that offers variety...We try to have something for everyone - and the choices are always changing (just a little)! If you click here you'll be taken to the list of current (and recent) best sellers that we have. If you still can't find what you're looking for, we can help! If we don't have the title you want, and it isn't too new (published this year), we can
request it
from other libraries in the state through the Access PA system.
If available, it will be shipped to us for you to pick up.
If you're the type who is more interested in newspapers or magazines than books, well, we can help you with that, too! We've got a new resource, and searching the news has just gotten easier...If you follow this link to
NewsBank, you'll be asked to enter your CHCL library card number, and then you're on your way! From there, you can easily search both the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Sure, you can do that from their websites, but NewsBank also offers you the option of searching more than 25 magazines - many go back to the 90's but one can be searched as far back as 1986! Pretty cool, eh? | | Heroes
Are you a Library Lover?
It's easier than ever to show your support and be a hero to the library! Consider honoring someone special. Honor an anniversary, thank a co-worker, donate a graduating student's favorite book, or present a memorial.
If you prefer, you can donate on-line by visiting our wishlist at Amazon. A nameplate will be placed in the book acknowledging your generosity.
You can also be a hero to our community! The patrons of the Chartiers-Houston Library help their neighbors in a number of ways. The library is a collection point for toiletries for the Washington Women's Shelter and non-perishables for area food banks. Thanks to the Lions Club, we also have collection boxes for old eye glasses and empty ink cartridges. In the past year, we've expanded our community outreach and are proud to say that we're a drop off center for Project Linus, a volunteer organization that provides blankets to traumatized children in our area and throughout the country. Be sure to check out the June 20th blog entry for a pic of one such blanket! |

Who I'd like to meet:
Summer Reading Participants: Catch the Reading Bug this summer! The summer reading program is entering its fourth week, so pessimists might say that you've already missed half the fun, but there's still plenty of time to join! The program runs until August 11th and all ages are welcome to come for stories, crafts, snacks, prizes, and surprises ;-) We continue to have special programs, too! Come in or call to register after you check out the
blog entry
listing times and ages.
Paper Recyclers: If we recycle 23.05 tons between May 1st and August 31st (a 20% increase over last year), we'll be eligible to win $500. If we up the ante further and recycle 24.01 tons, we'll be eligible to win $1,000. Be sure to donate your junk mail, catalogs, and newspapers to one of our two Abitibi bins in the parking lot...but please, no "kitchen cardboard" or phone books!
Friends: Be a Friend! Join the Friends of the Library on Tuesday, August 19th at 6:30pm for our monthly meeting and learn what is planned for the rest of the year. You can become a member for as little as $5 for an individual or $10 for a family.
Movie-Goers: Wednesday, July 30 will be our third show on the big screen, and this one, too, is in keeping with the Summer Reading theme and features the voice of Jerry Seinfeld. Bring your honey and see what all the buzz is about ;-) Don't forget to watch this space for updates...Two more movies are yet to come over the next few weeks :o)
Discussion Group Participants: The Lifetime Discussion Group will next meet on Tuesday, August 5th from 6-8 pm. Topics for this get-together will be taxes, the Federal Reserve and morality. All are welcome to this lively group.
