Growing up in Carlsbad, California was the perfect combination of beach and country to inspire my interest in music. I started writing songs as a teenager, mostly to woo my girlfriend- who is now my wife. I played out from L.A. to San Diego and immersed myself in the Southern California music scene. In 2000 I flew to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to record my first real demos with writer/producer Gordie Sampson (Jesus Take The Wheel). It was an incredible experience, one of those life changing ones, that took away any fears I had of picking up and moving away to pursue a dream. I remember flying home on the plane listening to the new recordings over and over. They were as good as gold to me, and I felt the same feeling that I had when I was six and got my first bike, or when I shared that first kiss, knowing what real love was. It was then that I knew I'd better go for it, or regret it.
My music soon caught the ear of Nashville entertainment attorney Robin Mitchell Joyce. With her encouragement, and the thumbs up and high fives of all my family and friends I moved to Nashville 4 years ago, with young family in tow, to pursue a career in music. I have so many people to thank for their love, support, encouragement, excitement, positive thoughts, feelings and prayers. Since moving to Nashville I have had the opportunity to meet and work with an amazing assortment of talented people. Special thanks to Gordie Sampson for producing my recent EP "When The Dust Clears."
When I was a kid our record cabinet was filled with music from Joni Mitchell to Johnny Cash, Flatt and Scruggs to Fleetwood Mac, and everything in between. My Dad's father was a coal miner from West Virginia, and my mom grew up playing music with her 11 brothers and sisters in Los Angeles. Their different musical tastes combined to provide the soundtrack for my childhood. I guess I turned out to be a California country boy.
I remember the summer that changed the way I thought about music forever. I was 16. I had a short attention span and spent way too much time on my hair. My older brother Judd had been writing poetry and putting his words to music for years, but I was always too busy to pay much attention. That summer was different. In a month Judd was joining the Army. I knew I shouldn't take that time for granted. I remember listening to him sing his songs, and realizing that I didn't always have to grab the guitar and sing somebody else's stuff- I could write my own. My words. My Music. I could be a songwriter. Thanks Judd...
As I developed my talents as a writer and performer, it became clear to me that Nashville was where I needed to be. I am a country singer, but I'm not afraid to stretch the boundaries. People love great music. That is what I strive to create. Music that touches people. Makes them laugh. Makes their eyes fill with tears, be they of joy, sorrow or regret. Music that lasts.
Today I sat on my back porch looking out at the tree in my yard. I admire that old oak. In the spring and summer it stands strong to shade us from the sun. But on this winter day, it stands leafless, and I can see where all the birds' nests are. I'd like to think my music is a little like that tree- offering people a place to retreat- take a break from the heat- and occasionally giving them a glimpse of what's behind the leaves.
Thanks for listening,
Chase
