I sold my soul to Rock-n-Roll somewhere around age 14. I remember hearing "Train in Vain" coming out of the busted speakers in an older friends' 1956 Chevy on a cold evening in late Fall, being carried through the atmosphere outta Chicago on WLS all the way down in the Ozarks. I was hooked! There was a feeling of desperation in that tune for me, and I felt it was real. More real, than 38 Special, and the other crap us Bumpkins were exposed to. In the winter of '81 My family moved to Michigan. I used to catch a ride into Saginaw with my Dad on Saturdays and go to this little Record Shop. Man, this guy had stuff in there like the Dead Kennedys, Teenage Jesus, etc. Wow! This ol' country kid got a wake up call. I knew my parents were not going to approve of this stuff. I was drawn in, and had to get my hands on it, and my ears wrapped around it somehow. Next door was a Hi-Fi shop owned by a gentleman, named Rob, about my Dad's age. Rob was a music nut, and had all of the Forbidden Fruit in his collection which he kindly put on C-90 Chromium oxidefor me. I got a Walkman(Sears brand of course) the following Chrstmas and was forever playing these subversive tapes, and dreaming of making music of my own. In the fall of '82 I befriended the German Exchange student, who in turn, turned me on to Neue Deutsche Welle.(the New German Wave) I have been hooked and craving more ever since. At the present I am near completing my MP3 collection of everything on the famous zickzack label out of Hamburg, owned by the man who coined the phrase " Neue Deustche Welle" himself, Alfred Hilsburg. I have since gone on the explore the roots of this fabulous aural sensation, and discoved Krautrock and the even earlier recordings of Karlheinz Stockhausen. In the mid eighties I was turned on to guitar-rock. Neo-psych, Paisley Underground, proto-alt-country, roots rawk, and americania. I became an avid reader of Bucketfull of Brains, whilst spinning the Rain Parade and some HC Punk stuff.(ie MDC, and the Circle Jerks) Nowadays my tastes are even more varied as I am constantly seeking out the roots and influences of people I like. This monkey is forever climbing back into the musical tree searching for the original Forbidden Fruit.Television
