Bristol’s Cheeba is a name that has been ringing out across UK dance floors for the last 12 months. Fusing unrivalled technical ability with an ear for music squarely aimed at the dance floor, his is a style all of his own and for all of us at the same time. As part of the renowned Bristol based crew the Detectives of Perspective, he is a resident DJ with Ninja Tune’s Solid Steel club nights and more recently Soundcrash. Frequently rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in alternative beats and hip hop, he has out shone them at every opportunity and cemented himself as one of the most popular DJs to emerge from the Solid Steel stable in some time. This was confirmed in 2007 when the label and the Solid Steel radio show listeners voted him runner up in the ‘Mix Of The Year’ poll and then in 2008 won it with his widely acclaimed mix 'Cheeba Investigates... 'The Case of The Missing Records'. Check out his award winning mixes in the 'Sounds Like' section below and prepare for mindmelt! In 2008, as part of Ninja Tune’s 20th Anniversary celebrations Cheeba was officially inaugurated into the Solid Steel family alongside Boom Monk Ben and Mone$hot to join the already outstanding team of Strictly Kev (DJ Food), DK, Coldcut and J-Mountain.
Cheeba has been found in clubs and at festivals across UK, whipping party people into a frenzy with his genre smashing freestyle DJ sets. Fusing neck snapping beats and breaks, underground dance floor gems and stone cold party classics into a melting pot of hip hop trickery and dance floor devistation, Cheeba has been the highlight of many at Big Chill 2008, Glastonbury, Bristol Festival and the best clubs up and down the country and will no doubt be the highlight of many more to come.
Cheeba has now also gone all AV too, after nearly 6 months in the making the audio-visual show is now live. Using the latest technology to enable video controlled and manipulated by vinyl the live shows make the most of this technogoly scratching everything from The Muppets to Aphex Twin and everything inbetween. Films made by Cheeba and James Reed (ex-audio bullies vj) sit cunningly along side video mashups, cartoons and a wealth of other bizzare yet wonderful video sources. Coming to a projector near you very soon. Your eyes wont believe your ears, keep them both peeled!
"Cheeba's attention to musical detail is as meticulous as his cuts, he leaves no stone or style unturned in his search" - DJ Food
”Cheeba – the new Director General at Flip-Flop-Trip-Hop AV-TV” - Hexstatic
"Cheeba is the sound and sight of Solid Steel's new school. Having won the 'Mix of The Year' award in 2008 and been a regular guest for Soundcrash over the last 12 months Cheeba's ability to rock a party is unrivaled. Now bringing visuals into the mix, this new show will twist sight and sound into a blend of beats and breaks cut with visual material from the far reaches of moving image history. Expect the unexpected... your eyes wont believe your ears, keep them both peeled!" - Soundcrash

THE DIARY Volume 1.5 (20 Years of the Remix) now available for free download at WWW.MUSICOFSUBSTANCE.COM!
“This CD just shows how much Chris Read knows about historic Hip Hop production techniques - Its just a shame he wasn't creating this stuff during the eras he's covering as we would probably rate the man as being up there with Paul C, Pete Rock, Premier and all! - I can't think of another Hip Hop CD I've played so much in years” (ANDY SMITH - PORTISHEAD)
"Chris continues the rap anthology concept of his super-dope 'The Diary' megamix in the shape of a remix project, re-lacing acapellas from 89-2009 with historically accurate beats. 'The Diary 1.5' serves as a great platform for Chris to showcase his ample beat-making skills whilst referencing those who've inspired him." (DJ WOODY - FORMER WORLD ITF CHAMPION)
“Wicked! The perfect companion to The Diary Mixtape. Shows an impressive knowledge of sounds from all eras.” (MR THING - FORMER WORLD DMC CHAMPION)
"Crazy! This is Rap History in the making. Chris proves his production skills on this one to the fullest. A wonderful and refreshing journey through all eras of hip hop. Double thumbs up!" (MARC HYPE - FORMER ITF CHAMPION)
