“Inspiring to a point of intoxication…”
--John Bruton, The Mercy Lounge
Eclectic, eccentric and endlessly energetic, Cheer Up Charlie Daniels are one of the most raucous and underappreciated bands in Nashville. Using their wealth of prodigious musical chops and unbridled musical enthusiasm, they traverse territory as diverse as surf rock, country, power-pop, psychedelic and big band—making them this city’s closest thing to quirky cult genre-jumpers Ween. Lyrically, they equate love to subjects such as high school truancy, chemistry experiments and time travel. Their stage show usually includes a smorgasbord of shenanigans—from outlandish attire to drum solos. We’ll just say it flat-out: CUCD are one of Music City’s must-see bands.

Hailed as “Nashville’s Most Eclectic Rock Band”, Cheer Up Charlie Daniels roared onto the local rock scene in 2008, with robotically-themed stage shows and colorfully outlandish costuming. Frequent rotation at such Nashville hotspots as The Mercy Lounge and Exit/In have dramatically increased Cheer Up Charlie Daniels' rabid fan base.
Their debut album, Live in ‘79, skillfully weaves outrageous front-man Neil O'Neill's often playful, occasionally naughty, lyricism with Beatles-esque melodies to create a genre-bending auditory adventure. Live in ‘79 is energetic enough to get even a studiously jaded Nashville audience up and out of their seats.
Other recent accomplishments include their television broadcast premiere on MCA TV 9, winning The Deli's ‘Band of the Month’, and their long-awaited debut release via limited edition vinyl. Immensely catchy standout tracks such as "Moving to Malibu" and "Bunsen Burner Baby Blues" aptly illustrate why Mike Grimes of The Basement says, “Cheer Up Charlie Daniels is going to own this town.”
Seeing CUCD last night for the first time since their 3 song 8 off 8th performance proved to be an eye opening experience. Their poppy tunes and contagious melodies, like that of “Bunsen Burner Baby Blues,” spilled over into the crowd and had many first time viewers dancing throughout the set. The word is getting out about CUCD and they will soon be the "don't miss" show of Nashville.
--Ryan Bruce, The Deli and Exit In
The songs were absurdly infectious and the delivery was stellar. It is so great to hear a band that sounds just as together on stage as they do in recording.

"Hope you guys like Steely Dan," announced Neil O'Neill. He was singing for Cheer Up Charlie Daniels, who then confounded expectations by playing "No Matter What You Do" by Badfinger. They followed it with a rousing version of "Kodachrome" that brought out the song's infectious catchiness and included a fiddle breakdown. The band featured previous performers Caitlin Rose, Tristen and Larissa Maestro on BGVs, who had dressed for the theme in knee socks and high-waisted shorts: "Let's hear it for shorts!"
They concluded with Glenn Campbell's "Southern Nights" (no Dan, sadly).
So that's where Imiglio is. Thanks for bringin' the show at the Mercy Lounge last night. You guys are awesome. The monkey-robot looked like he was having the time of his life.
I guess 'audio engineer' can be used loosely in my case haha. I graduated, but am not working at a studio. I am however keeping an ear out for internships now (had to find paying jobs first). I already feel like I've forgotten too much. I'm hoping its like riding a bike.
oh! and sorry your pics are kinda dim, gary! i think it was the reflectors on your shirt - they sucked up all the light! lol i'm gonna work on lightening them up a little, k?! : )
We will be taping the show on the 13th for a live album. We are going to be playing brand new material as well as material off of our upcoming album. Come see what's new.
