| About chelsea on fire |
Chelsea on Fire formed in late 1994 with original
drummer, Adam Simha, Josey Packard on vocals and guitar, and Amy DiSciullo on
bass. After a series of shows in the local area, they were quickly spotlighted
as having an intense, cathartic, and sincere approach to live performance.
"The sincerity and passion that poured off the stage was tangible, the
songs simple, polished, and memorable, the band members were comfortable on
stage and without pretension, provided exactly the firm and dominating
prescence the songs demanded." (joe bonni)
The demo cd "Chelsea on Fire" was released
in January of 1995 to critical acclaim. It was most frequently noted that this
3 piece was more than capable of making "a big rock sound" with just
the simple ingredients of drums, bass, and guitar. Josey Packard's incredible
vocal range and raw power highlighted the songwriting with simple but
infectious lyrics. This cd represents the first 8 songs the band ever
wrote.
It was this style of music that caught the attention
of rocker, Joan Jett, later that year. The band began a relationship with her
and her management, hoping to release a second cd. While the contract
negotiations failed, Jett performed several dates with Chelsea on Fire as
support.
The following year the band was picked up by the
label, Curve of the Earth, to release a full-length cd. "Once is
Never" was released in May of 1997. With Amy and Adam now singing more
harmonies, and the sheer passing of time, enabling the band to get to know one
another better, it became a much more polished and accessible effort. It was
voted as one of the 10 best albums of the year by the Boston Phoenix, and with
Packard's apt description of the songwriting style as "massaging your
temples and then squeezing a little", remained true to the original form.
In September of 1998, drummer Adam Simha left the
band. Auditions were held, but in the meantime, the band carried on with the
help of Sandy Merhy, of the Kitty Kill, by playing a number of acoustic shows.
Eventually, Jen Chouinard was chosen as the replacement.
The band worked on some tracks for a new cd, "Middlesex
County", and continued to perform around the Northeast. Amy and Josey hit the acoustic circuit again before adding Rach Fuhrer on the drums in June of 1999. After just 7 warm up shows Rach and the band left for a 7 week European tour in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland. They brought with them the limited release "Sticky",
made from the "Middlesex County" sessions.
The band finished a
second tour of Germany in 2000 to support their newest release 'Middlesex County'.
After the 3rd tour of Europe in 2002, Chelsea on Fire disbanded.
