When one door closes another will open in it's place - with the downfall of Dallas' hard rock act Totem in the spring of 2006 the door opened for the birth of Chemical Tree. The band formed with the intention of revisiting the classic metal and classic rock sounds of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, and fusing them with modern elements of bands like Tool. From the ranks of Totem came guitarist Dave Utorka and bass player Joey Grice. Hooking up with former Backbone vocalist Steve Russell and Backbone drummer Joe Campbell, the foundation for Chemical Tree was put into place by the end of 2006, and with a handful of gigs under their belts they looked to make a few changes, solidify the lineup and move forward. They proceeded to secure the talents of former The Gobo's band leader, and multi-instrumentalist John Howser joining the band on bass guitar in the spring of 2007. The change was done to allow Joey Grice to return to playing guitar, the instrument that he started out on as a musician. But change was still on the horizon though when Joey left the band to join up their friends in the doom/stoner outfit Orthodox Fuzz in the early summer of 2008. Now back to the nuts and bolts of their original sound the band played a succession of shows before beginning work on a 4 song EP with producer Bart Rose in September of 2008. Sessions at Fort Worth Sound produced the quintessential Chemical Tree and family, friends, and fans alike all agree that this is a sterling representation of the true beginnings of the band. With a definable multi-layered vocal harmonies, a lead vocalist with powerful range and dynamics, and guitar riffs torn from the back pages of the Black Sabbath song book, the band created a unique and original sound - unmistakable and unforgettable. But before the pieces of the puzzle could be entirely complete, change again entered their lives. Original percussionist Joe Campbell was forced to leave the band, a great opportunity awaiting him and his family far away from the band. Enter Randy Lovvorn - a gifted percussionist, and a true friend - a comrade and like-minded spirit that would blend into the chemistry that is Chemical Tree. October 2009 begins the next chapter of the band...
