"With your entire being, develop your life." ~ Chen Xin

Thank you for visiting our page on MySpace. There have been lots of changes and growth since the beginning of 2009. The biggest achievement was the publishing of The Golden Thread: Essential Principles of Self Defense. Dubbed by many as the clearest, most concise volume of defense principles in publication. Watch the trailer by clicking on the video-picture to the left (top image, under movies).

I've also add classical french-style foil fencing to my teaching repertoire per the demand coming from the past Olympics. Having my background in fencing, both at St.Louis University and UNC-Greensboro, I was happy to see the interest and was very eager to get back to swordplay myself.

Regarding our classes in Tai Ji Quan (Tai Chi), we are currently at the Gateway YWCA, Polo Park Recreation Center, as well as Reynolda and Hanes Park (Privately). We urge you to consider the tremendous benefits that can come from this beautiful, stylish, and therapeutic practice. Please journey over to our newly-revamped website at ChenCenter -dot- com. Thank you!

Wushu::..The term "wushu" means martial techniques. Wushu is based on the Shaolin fist and has been revised from the traditional forms by combining the elegance of Peking Opera, gymnastics and acrobatics. The lightning-fast movements, (some)physically demanding actions & graceful postures makes wushu a perfect performing art. Wushu is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and will have its first introduction to the Olympics in 2008. Film (i.e. Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers) has helped greatly in spreading the name of Wushu.

Mixed Martial Arts::..Learning the skills necessary to defend yourself and win sparring/fighting competitions require a blend of effective boxing, grappling/wrestling and kickboxing skills. Students interested in this intense training should consult Coach Joyce by email. private sessions only

Women's Self Defense::..Developed over a span of 12 years and using the most effective and efficient movements of over 15 different martial styles. (i.e. Jujitsu, Sambo, Krav Maga, Thai Boxing, Kungfu, Tai Chi, etc). Workshops last 8 weeks (students discounted)

What is Taijiquan?::..Taijiquan is an ancient martial art which began in China over 400 years ago. Taiji is something unique to each individual and is something I, personally, hold very dear. Beyond the beauty of the form, the rich and interesting history, the extraordinary practitioners...there lies something, more...something unnameable.
In addition...

Taiji is the ‘spark’ or the ‘beat’ of life. To learn Taiji you must first grow to understand this principle. At times it is impossible to teach a person, because Taiji is not about a form or even about the ability to relax and bring the body to a serene state. It is about (Te) Virtue & Morality. It is the expression of your ethical & moral person and your relationship with the world. It is what Grandmaster Feng Zhiqiang calls “The Big Tao” (the Ultimate Path).

Wu-Wei (Non-Doing) To move in accordance with nature’s flow. It’s sailing where the wind blows as opposed to rowing a canoe. In order to conquer stress…to relieve the troubled mind…we must truly and whole-heartedly seek this state. We must always remain soft and pliable (like water) as the ancient texts say. Because as water is soft & weak in appearance, it invariably overcomes the rigid and hard in due time. To truly perform Taiji we strive to move not like water but as water. We don’t push people or things with our mechanical body, we move our true intention and we occupy space. We never alter space, we are space incarnate. Space and ourselves are one and the same.

    Hi Chen Center,

We are doing free Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan classes, starting Today at Riveriside Community College for Seniors,

The old form of Yang style has some similarities to the Chen style, that Grandmaster Feng teaches. A few of the NWTCCA teachers teach Feng's method. www.dotaichi.com

We will be doing a kubotan, ie pocketstick workshop in October with Toma, Sensei.

    Have a great weekend
