ROCK SCHOOL FOR GIRLS
by Rhiannon Thomas, Liz Pickard and Cherie Pyne
Sounds Like
what you'd say to yourself after stumbling down the alley
A magnetic performer acclaimed for her resonant lyrics, raw guitar riffs, and potently vulnerable voice, Newfoundlander Cherie Pyne's "songs for a solitary road trip" grew out of her background in playful, raw, experimental punk and indie rock. In Montreal, Cherie's main project is THE FAMILY INSTITUTION, a new 4-piece founded with fellow Montreal Rock Camp for Girls volunteers Pamela Dwyer, Anne Gauthier, and Sheena Hozsko. Pyne also plays in the Harbourcoats, a solo project of Bryan Webb (Constantines) with Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse/Wooden Stars). Her newest songs, 'The Swallowed Times' and 'Tiny Steps (No Hero's Parade)', were commissioned by writer/director Sherry White for White's new feature "Crackie", which is currently playing film festivals across Canada. Pyne's most recent album, "La Marée Noire", was released in 2008 under her pseudonym Slippery Rabbits, received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for Newfoundland's Atlantis prize (reviews below).
In her hometown St. John's, Pyne played in experimental punk bands The Peep-holes, The Literally Gay, Mechanical Bull, and Her Majesty's Secret Cervix. Her 2005 solo EP, titled Slippery Rabbits, was a co-pro with Brian Borcherdt of Holy Fuck, recorded on 8-track reel-to-reel tape in a bedroom closet in Toronto. She recorded her first full-length album, Little Springboard, in a bay attic with friends and bandmates Jon Hynes (Trailer Camp), Andrew Robinson (Magnus Svensons, Good Kids Pretend They're Bad) and Victor Lewis (Kujo, Mudlarks, Hanging Horses). This critically acclaimed release was rated the MUSE's Best Local Album of 2006 and got Pyne nominated for MUSIC NL Female Artist of the Year.
Pyne has played many festivals and shows and has been both a creator of and a performer in interdisciplinary works across Canada. She composes music for indie films and has been an invited speaker at conferences about d.i.y. and the status of women in music. "Rock School for Girls" (see video to left), a video doc about workshops co-created by Pyne, Liz Pickguard and Rhiannon Thomas in Newfoundland in 2002, has played at Montreal's Volatile Works festival, The Rock Can Roll Festival, and The St. John's International Women's Film and Video Festival. Cherie taught d.i.y. Girls Rock workshops at the Labrador Creative Arts Festival in 2007 and in summer 2009 was a camp coach at Montreal's first Rock Camp for Girls.
"If you haven't already discovered the awesomeness that is Montreal-based Newfoundlander Cherie Pyne, a.k.a Slippery Rabbits, then you are in for a treat with La Marée Noire ...an absolute treasure, musically as well as physically. The song-writing and instrumentation is fragile yet fiery; delicate yet still rock and roll as hell ...opening this cd is like opening a handmade gift: you're eager to see what's inside, at the same time respecting the efforts of the giver to make your present extra original. I can't even pick a favourite song. I love them all so much...Equal parts PJ Harvey, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, with a hint of the Moldy Peaches, Slippery Rabbits' La Marée Noire is a jewel of an album by one of our province's best exported rocker grrls. In the download age, this is an essential must-buy." -- Current Magazine, Sep 18-Oct 1, 2008
"From heartbreaking violin melodies to the blowing of a beer bottle, Cherie Pyne's latest work is a ticklish blend of crystal clear vocal harmonies and raucous punk-rock riffs...echoes of PJ Harvey, Built to Spill, Joey Santiago and Sonic Youth" -- Arts and Entertainment, The Telegram, Newfoundland, August 27th, 2008
"In a world of impersonal downloaded music, Cherie Pyne's new album [La Marée Noire] is a breath of fresh air, both for its music and its packaging. The music is 100 per cent alternative -- and uncompromisingly original. The musicianship is superb and the music is solid -- plenty of unpredictable arrangements and crunching alt-rock guitars -- but the stand out feature is Pyne's voice. It is at once defiant and strong; fragile and vulnerable." -- Meeker on Media, The Telegram, Newfoundland, Aug 2008
"This much-anticipated album was the best critical success of 2006...Every aspect of [Little Springboard], from the photography by Rachel Jean Harding, to the recording quality, to the contributions of all the band members, is seriously awesome. Pyne may have moved off to Montreal, but she will not be forgotten by St. John's audiences." - TOP LOCAL ALBUMS OF 2006, The Muse
"All the songs have a collaborative feel that surely indicates a meeting of the minds...These guys are serious players, and very in-sync conceptually. This is not a fashion band folks...I listened to [Little Springboard] more than a hundred times. I bought copies for my car, my bedroom, my living room, and my friends...Pyne's lyrics are profound. They are honest and mature, accurate and playful, spontaneous and thoughtful...tremendous courage" - Newfoundland Quarterly, Sep 2006
"Newfoundland's Cherie Pyne is no longer a mystery girl...fusing the patchy guitar work of PJ Harvey with the robust, sultry vocals of Cat Power...[on Little Springboard] she also combines the artful nakedness of Julie Doiron's Eric's Trip era vocals with the cocksure guitar meddling of early Sonic Youth" - Chart Attack/ Canadians Making News
"brilliant and unique...ethereal but strong...hypnotic, pulsating rock...richly produced... [on Little Springboard] Pyne sings of love, heartache and reality most raw, creating songs that are subversive, intensely engaging and full of sweet moments...she has certainly stirred things up in Newfoundland." - Downhome Magazine
"Cherie Pyne's Little Springboard is like buying a cold case of beer with a GST rebate cheque, it's unpretentious and awesome at the same time. The album has a dark, indie rock sound, but the songs are danceable, intricate and spacey...intense, thought-provoking songs...Pyne's accomplishments reign high on this album" - MUSE RECOMMENDED LIST, The Muse
"Marrying musical threads as diverse as Bjork and Neil Young, [on Slippery Rabbits] Pyne crafts a sound that is familiar and still uniquely her own. The stand out track for me is 'Little Springboard' but they're all solid." - Product of Newfoundland

happy new year/solstice... which is today!

Thanks for the Add. It great to know that someone has the same name as me that is A singer. That is awesome. Our name isn't very comman. My Name is French and I am sure your is too. Good luck with your singing!!- Cherie Torres (Plant)
hello cherie..i am on kemount rd high above the slushy streets...just thought id say hello as its been about 78 years since i saw ya...any hoop i should go learn my learnins for tha day..have a real time dank
ah ha! i hadn't seen your comment when i wrote mine...
well, not much with bleat (tho we did play a show with an altered lineup), but bleatbox filmed a music video. it was a lot of fun, a beautiful day outside, and among other characters gaylen and i parodied 'american gothic' and (even better) mates of state! we both wore wigs for that one.
we also portrayed ominous yet bumbling authoritarian figures. i played one of those in Bill's movie too. they seem to show up a lot in these video projects. maybe it's from watching gomer pyle and mchale's navy when i was a kid.
how about writing 3 songs in 10 minutes, off the top of your head with a tape recorder runnning? one of the songs is bound to be alright.
when gaylen heard the end of empties, she said "now that's commitment." we're starting to get some gigs around here finally. Bill has been rocking the house as usual. i hope montreal is going well. you're in the top friends too-- the row of bleat vocal heroes...
