Cherry Bikini are an underground electronica/electro-pop duo comprised of international bad-asses Sophie Boscallini and Armand Abagliani. Both Armand and Sophie moved around a lot in life. Armand lived most of his life in the United States, Sophie - in Europe. Somehow, both ended up in Paris at the turn of the millenium, where they met through some mutual friends who wanted to start a band. The band didn't pan out, but the musical chemistry between Armand and Sophie was so strong, they decided to pursue their own thing, giving birth to Cherry Bikini.
Their first CD, Cherry Bikini, recorded in Armand's apartment in Paris with little more than an 8-track, some sample software, and a budget of about $50, has since become a classic in the sextronica (electronica about sex) music sub-genre (a sub-genre which the duo helped to pioneer back in 2002) with such infamous songs as "Just Fuck Me", and "Come So Hard". A whole lot of downloads and some college radio play helped fuel CB's notoriety, as did their appearance on several compilation albums.
After relocating to Los Angeles, Cherry Bikini recorded and released their second CD, Dream Days. Although lyrically not as explicit, Dream Days still deals with sex, sexuality, and a free and easy attitude towards life. The Bikinis' third release, Remixed, is a varied collection of remixes of their songs by underground DJs and producers. Their fourth album, "13" is their most diverse release to date, combining various elements to create a spectrum that is at once hyper-sexual, playful, and dreamy, all the while retaining the unmistakable Cherry Bikini sound.
Slabs of the Tabernacle NYE Party @ La Cheetah Club (formerly The Twisted Wheel) 31/12/09
Mark du Mosch (Moustache Records - Rotterdam) Electrick Dragon LIVE (Rotterdam) Casionova (Cyber Dance Records, Magic Waves, IFM) Slabs of the Tabernacle DJs
Headlining the New Year party we welcome back Mark du Mosch. This will be his third time at Slabs so it's fair to say that we have much respect for the Rotterdam artist. An obsessive collector, Mark's DJ sets manage to be intriguing and hard rocking in equal measures, and we really couldn't think of anyone better to headline the New Year extravaganza.
Joining Mark will be fellow Rotterdamer Ricky the Dragon, performing a rare live set as Electrick Dragon. Having put out records dating right back to the early 90s (under many many aliases), Ricky carries with him some proper techno credentials. With his most recent output on Moustache Records he has produced two epic synth party bombs that are now firm favourites of ours. We first caught the Dragon live show at the Magic Waves festival earlier this year and it blew us all away, and so are delighted to welcome Ricky to Glasgow for his first Scottish performance.
And finally, making the trip up from Brighton will be the Italo battle axe Casionova. Over the past two years Casionova has become a permanent fixture at Slabs of the Tabernacle. His DJ sets are straight from the heart affairs and again we couldn't think of a better guest to see off 2009.
