Born in Alassio, Italy, in 1972, Chester Harlan began studying classical piano in Rome at age 10. In 1987 he moved to Paris with his family to pursue his high-school studies and began studying jazz guitar with guitarist and educator Pierre Cullaz. In 1991 he attended the "American School of Modern Music" and at the same time started to study philosophy at the Sorbonne University.
His eclectical musical journey evolved somewhere around blues, jazz and avant-garde and he quickly joined severals musical projects with which he performs in Paris and all over France: "Vox Populi!" (experimental music with persian songs), Freebies (funk), Barbara Luna, Gambeta Trio (argentinean music), Duplessy/Harlan Duo (flamenco-jazz) among others.
In 1994 he wins a scholarship for the Berklee College of Music in Boston from which he graduated in 1996 (Bachelor’s Degree in jazz composition and guitar), and he's granted with the "Berklee College of Music International Grant Award".
He studyed privately with Mick Goodrick, John Abercrombie, Hal Crook, Jon Damian and attended master-classes with Pat Martino, Joe Diorio and John Scofield.
In 1997, Chester decided to establish himself in New York where he started his own group, performing actively in the New York City and Boston area, and working as a sideman in the realms of jazz, funk, electronic music, avant-garde, brazilian music to only name few.
In 1998 he spended some time in Brazil, where he met many musicians that will be future members of the recently created project called "8VB", with bassist from Rio de Janeiro, Bruno Migliari, with whom he recorded "Amicizia" produced by the prestigeous label "Delira Musica"
In 1999, Chester returned to Paris, to join the sextet of Argentinean singer Barbara Luna, with whom he recorded the album "India Morena" and performed in several festivals throughout Europe and the Americas, including an opening in Seattle for Peter Gabriel, as well as performances in Singapore, New Caledonia and at the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
In 2002 he recorded his debut album "Gardenias" with a french quintet, featuring acclaimed saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti, exploring many influences from jazz to brazilian instrumental music and pop, creating a sound-world that leaves a large space for interaction and improvisation.
The improvisational style and his musical influences are very numerous: from Shostakovich, Debussy, Ravel, Bartok, to Frank Zappa, Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, Gong, Sly Stone, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Django Reinhardt, Lennie Tristano, Jobim, Hermeto Pascoal, Fela Kuti, Bjork, Pierre Henri, Philip Glass, Grant Green, Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Don Cherry, just to name few.
His strong passion for visual arts also brought him to write music for theater ("Aliocha ou le Secret du Vent", play created by Sylvie Borten for the Gaité Theater in Paris), television (SKY TV), and severals documentaries.
At this moment Chester is in the process of preparing a new album that will be recorder between Paris and Rio de Janeiro, and it will reflect the contemporary and cosmopolitan spirit that nourishes the sound of the band.
He currently lives between Rome and Paris where he teaches, performs and composes music for his group as well as for television and the multimedia world.
ITALIANO
