Influences
Ray - Frank Zappa, John Petrucci, Steve Howe, Neal Morse, Alex Lifeson, Marty Friedman, Mikael Akerfeldt, Randy Rhoads, Michael Romeo, GENESIS, Bruce Springsteen, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Tom Englund, Fredrik Danhage, John Frusciante, Al DiMeola, Glenn Tipton, Steve Vai, Markus Sigfridsson from Darkwater (The Swedish one, not the the German one. The Swedish make high-class metal!), Allan Morse, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, and STRAVINSKY!!!!! Life in general also tends to influence me, considering that I'm living it.
Kyle - Anything and everything from Vinnie Paul and Joey Jordison, to Buddy Rich and Steve Gadd, to the Dora the Explorer or JJ the Jet Plane theme song. My uncle was also a huge influence to me.
Cheyne-Stokes was formed in 2004 by Kyle Tresch and Ray Flanagan. Initially sparked by long hours of playing "Iron Man" in Ray's basement (Kyle with a single snare drum, Ray with an out-of-tune First Act Start knockoff and practice amp), the band has grown considerably since then and continues to do so. With the addition of Kyle's younger brother Garrett on bass, the foundation for what is now Cheyne-Stokes had been laid.
After hearing Josh Mewhinney sing "A Whole World" from Aladdin for a school play, it was decided that he was the only man for the job of fronting the group. Shortly afterwards, Ben Weinerman was added as rythym guitarist. Shortly afterwards, Ben and the band parted ways. Guitarist Mike Biegel was welcomed shortly the departure and was a mainstay for the last 3 years, enduring many crucial moments in the band's genesis. Recently, due to various conflictions, Biegel has also parted ways with Cheyne-Stokes, leaving the current 4-piece line-up.
In the present, Cheyne-Stokes is dedicated to becoming the tightest, most accomplished musicians they can be whilst writing the best songs within their capabilities. With individual influences so eclectic and diverse that you would wonder how these people survive in a band without killing eachother, every individual brings something unique to the table and any weakness exhibited by one member is surely fortified by another. They are a force to be reckoned with in the setting of a live show, most recently justified by taking 2nd place in the Tri-C High RockOff Final Exam. C-S is currently working on new material amidst lining up some shows for Spring/Summer '09. You don't know what Cheyne-Stokes is until you've experienced it in person. In the words of ELP, you gotta see the show!
The band has recently released its Studio Demo, recorded at Aframe Studios and produced by Eric Ortopan and Marco Hilj. They are on sale for $5 a copy.
Track listing for Studio Demo:
1. What is Left?
2. That Much Harder
3. The Devil's Fire

H. Jackson Brown: Good character is more to be praised than outstanding talent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have to build it, piece by piece -- by thought, choice, courage, and determination.
