Formed in 2003 by three like-minded Chicago teachers, the Chicago Art Department started as an interMEDIA arts school looking to explore art making through collaborative projects and interdisciplinary studies outside of the "art school" mainstream. Students were given the opportunity to focus on more experimental themes and approach art with a broadened sense of connectivity and exchange. From video production, to drawing and dance, there's no limit to CAD's desire to mix and weave analog & digital art into a beautiful new expression. Currently located in Pilsen, and with 4 years of "classes" under their belt, CAD is now a fully functioning Non-Profit, and is now offering a range of classes free to all partipants!
STAY IN SCHOOL!
OUR MISSION:
The Chicago Art Department (CAD) cultivates new and emerging Chicago artists. Through education, exhibition, artist residencies, and community building, we are dedicated to supporting new voices, ideas, and practices in contemporary art. CAD seeks to serve the real-world needs of young artists seeking to establish their personal practice, as well as provide a breeding ground of creative collaboration and exploration.
Our support of new and emerging artists consist of:
Education & Artistic Development:
The Chicago Art Department offers educational opportunities aimed at nurturing artistic and practical development.
THEME-BASED PROGRAMS are intermedia-based programs leading participants through a process of learning and working in a variety of media, with the goal of producing a theme-based exhibition. The exhibitions for theme-based programs typically show group exercises and individual projects, all in a variety of media.
SKILL-BASED PROGRAMS focus on technical explorations for the purpose of improving skills. Skill-based exhibitions typically showcase individual projects.
Exhibition & Outreach
The Chicago Art Department produces exhibitions, programs, and events to not only create greater awareness, but also provide regular opportunities and outlets for artists to make and share work. The Chicago Art Department provides exhibition opportunities in other media as well, such as the web, print, and video, in addition to physical gallery spaces.
Artist Residencies
The Chicago Art Department is operated by and works in conjunction with 7 resident artists who share studio space and exhibit their work in the storefront gallery. In addition to operating CAD, these artists are an invaluable resource for knowledge, artistic inspiration, and practical experience.
Community Building & Collaboration
In addition to formal classes and exhibitions, the Chicago Art Department seeks to promote opportunities for people to network in casual social settings, and is dedicated to building a community that will grow and develop through collaboration and partnerships with other like-minded individuals and organizations.
THE APPROACH:
The artistic experience at The Chicago Art Department (CAD) is driven by three simple goals:
TRY IT!
Our art is about exploring uncharted territories. It's about the love of experimenting. It's about providing a comfortable environment to try unfamiliar things and push your boundaries.
MAKE IT!
Our art is about translating impulse and ideas into a realized, actualized work. It's about composing, crafting, and finishing.
SHARE IT!
Our art is about sharing it with others. It's about showing your work in an exhibition, performing in front of an audience, screening, publishing, documenting.

Ever get the feeling you were being watched? Poor Kara hasn't gotten much sleep lately. She claims that there's an evil Jack-O-lantern following her around, but no one will believe her! It seems to happen only at this time of the year, around Halloween to be exact! She professes that she's not crazy! I for one, am starting to believe her!! ~S

Just checking in to see if anyone is needing, wanting, or ready for any artwork (TATTOOS, painting, photo-fixing, etc.) Check out my portfolio and songs and leave lots of comments! Many thanks and please pass the word. Josh
Just wondering if anyone wanted to have some art done; I'm in dire need of the work so feel free to pass the word. Also doing trades, and willing to travel a bit if necessary...Preferably for tattoo parties if that's a concept. I also do traditional art, photo-retouching and fixing, graphic design, freelance research and writing, (I'm sort of a Jack-of-All-Trades), portraitures, etc...
Also, check out some of my original music here on my profile playlist if you haven't already and let me know what you think.
Hey friend, just stoppin by your page to say hello! Hoping you're enjoying a wonderful and groovy week!!! Much Luv!! ~Steve
This is a relief I sculpted a few years back
for my 3-D design class. The assignment was to design something from
the park and/or its surroundings. Since we were right there on the lake
front in Grant park, this was an obvious choice for me. ~S
