   About Chicago Zither Orchestra
The Chicago Zither Club Orchestra was founded in 1913 during a time when zither music was widely appreciated and practiced. German, Austrian and Swiss immigrants brought their zither music to the United States as early as the 1850s. The music flourished in America, as it did in Europe, through folk music and classical forms during the 19th and 20th centurys. The 1949 film “The Third Man” staring Orson Wells and Joseph Cotton provided the signature piece for the instrument in the background music composed by Anton Karas. This theme music has become a staple and encore favorite at live performances. Today the Chicago Zither Orchestra is one of the few groups remaining that preserves the rich heritage of zither music in it's performances. The group explores Bavarian folk music, Viennese waltzes and classical selections. The orchestra also performs popular music and avant-garde music of the 21st century, as do its European counterparts. The Chicago Zither Orchestra gives two performances, in Spring and Fall, every year. Zither players from around the world travel to Chicago to perform with the orchestra and participate in seminars sponsored by the club. Under the direction of composer and conductor William Taylor the orchestra is experiencing a revitalization of an old musical form and are looking toward a bright future, while maintaining the strong roots and traditions that have stood for over 90 years. " A truley unique musical experience that is steeped in great tradition... A one of a kind." --Ryan Edward Morris, Editor and Music Critic ~ Carbondale Times Newspaper.
