Chief was born on November 14, 1966 in Milton hospital in Milton Massachusetts. Chief's given name is Richard J. Sullivan III, He adopted the name Chief in 2000.
His family lived on a horse farm in Hanson, Massachusetts. Later, they moved to horse farms in Maryland, and Oklahoma. Chief's father travelled for work and was often away from home so Chief had responsibility for taking care of several horses starting at a young age.
Chief's love of music began with his first record purchase, Cat Stevens "Another Saturday Night". Later he was inspired by the Rolling Stones, "She's So Cold", and Bob Marley's "Coming in from the Cold.", and many others. At this time Chief began writing songs and has written approximately 100 songs since then.
Chief learned to play guitar at Stephen Decatur High in Berlin, Maryland from one of his school mates, Brian Robinson who loaned him one of his grandfather's (a local country singer's) hollowbody guitars. Chief practiced a lot and received an A in his high school guitar class.
Chief's first electric guitar was a sunburst Fender Elite Stratocaster. He formed a band with friends and later moved to Arlington, Massachusetts where he joined another band, The Magnificent Seven, who played at Arlington High School.
Chief graduated Arlington High School in 1985 and went to University of Vermont where he received a BA in Political Science in 1989. While in Vermont Chief played with other musicians and at local clubs. At this time the band Phish was also playing at clubs in Burlingtin Vermont which Chief saw play at a club called Nectars before Phish became famous.
In 1990 Chief moved to Los Angeles to attend Law School. While there he started his own band with friend and guitarist Gary Schram, drummer Chuck Crump, and guitarist Jerry Sandoval, which played at Molly Malones in Los Angeles and other clubs.
He graduated from Southwestern Law School and passed the California bar in 1993. He began his own law practice representing the injured and the accused, which he still does to this day.
Also in 1993 Chief released a six song EP entitled "Getting to the Point" recorded in Eagle Rock, California with the help of studio owner Mike Wolfe.
Chief continued to write songs and play in local clubs. In 2005 Chief began recording his first full length CD with the help of producer Brendan Eder, called "Famous Pioneer" the cover of which captures Chief outside the "Famous Pioneer" casino in downtown Las Vegas.
Famous Pioneer has ten country rock songs on it covering the themes of freedom and romance.

Chief's band, the Houserockers, consist of drummer Don Andreola; singer, guitarist and percussionist Amy Katherine Hall; guitarist Ronnie Verville; and Bass player Mike Frazee.
