My name is Chiki, pronounced Ch-i-ck-E. I was born Christine Correia in Boston, MA to very nice parents. They were born in Portugal and my family later nicknamed me Chiki. My parents came to America with their families because they didn't want to walk miles from the well and wash clothes on a rock anymore. This is important because it's imperative that you understand the Euro-Catholic upbringing I had so you can understand why I became so eccentric. I came from a VERY L-A-R-G-E family which has it's good and bad aspects. Everyone was very musical in my family, probably because they were singing on farms in Portugal since there was no radio. Here, in America though, we listened to music EVERYDAY. Pop music was a staple in my family and we all learned every popular dance and lyrics to songs. I started messing around with changing lyrics to songs at the wee age of six. It was just my attempt to be as cool as my aunts but when I saw I got attention for it, I decided that being cute had its advantages. I made it my business to be cute, funny, dance and make up songs on queue. I have always very much been into anything Old Hollywood, Broadway, and Glamour and Fashion.
From there it became an obsession with getting attention. The fact that I wore huge glasses that made me look like 'Pat' (yes, the one from SNL), and a bowl haircut made me prime suspect for ridicule in my very urban surroundings. To have friends over was a monumentous occasion and because I took dance lessons, nobody in my family told me IT wasn't OK to dress like early Madonna and wear fishnets to school with my skirt. Again, more attention. My grandmother would do 'the sign of the cross' as I left for school.
Although I was a great student and surprisingly well-behaved at school, at home I was a completely different child. I think that my imagination gave me a skewed perception of the world that made me a fabulous combination of naive and a little strange. I cannot tell jokes without laughing at them which makes them less funny but my friends don't care.
OK, at thirteen, in a desperate attempt to make me think like a normal Portuguese girl, my parents sent me to work to pay for my dance lessons. I worked in my aunt's hair salon. She hated when I cleaned her 'merchandise shelving'. I was a klutz and knocked down those shelves many times. I managed to hold down the job and afterschool and Saturdays worked to pay for dance lessons and the dance company I was in.
It was about the age of thirteen that I started to sing and people started to notice. I quickly realized you can get more gigs as a singer and really started to hone in these skills. I got noticed really quickly from producers in the area--much to my surprise. Now that I wore contacts and my bowl haircut had grown out, I was cute. They all said 'You're the next Madonna.' Well, after being styled with many 'slut' outfits, I realized that nobody was going to take me seriously and just thought I was fit to be a puppet. I wanted more and knew I was capable of much more but couldn't afford formal music lessons. So, in the meantime, I played in musicals (usually leads, thanks very much) in highschool and in Community Theater.
At seventeen, I went and wrote, directed, produced and caste about five musicals and plays. I won an award from the Mayor of Somerville. It was one of the first times that I was so proud that people expected me to do more than entertain and 'be fun' and cute. I decided to go to College after all. Something happened in College. I had two professors that pushed me. They believed in me and I graduated on the Dean's List. People saw me as 'smart'. Wow.
So, what's the artist turned student left to do? Join the Business World of course. I know that sounds weird but I really wanted to not be so naive. I learned. I got a little jaded with all of the animals in the Corporate Jungle but decided that I was going to succeed. Within three years, I went from being a Receptionist to Assistant to The President. Take that you naysayers that thought I was unfit to do anything besides art.
Well, that brings us to about 2006. That's when I got 'rediscovered'. I was outside the Boston World Trade Center and I was singing, as usual. I was overheard by one of the most popular acapella groups in the area. They invited me to sing with them and said 'if you're not getting paid for your voice, there is a problem'. I started to work in the studio again and found that this 'character' kept coming out--this bluesy, quirky character. The music was this eclectic mix of everything I know and the sound blended Electro, Pop, Blues, Rock and Jazz. To go with the music, I envisioned my show. Me as a Pop Space Princess who had robots for dancers and a theatrical space show that would not be typical and something nobody had seen.
The result gained me so much attention from fabulous publications, awesome blogs, gigs, industry people, and I have so many new fans outside of my family and friends. It also gained attention from an artist that I was going to do a show with but we won't get into that.
2009, just recently I was a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Contest for my song '1 U Luv' which has also been reviewed by top DJ Pools. This really proved to me that all my hard work, experience and background makes me unique and that's a good thing in this world. I stick to who I am and love me or hate me, I am not full of it. I back up everything I do and everything I do isn't a copy of someone else. I stopped doing what I loved for a short time and I believe I am stronger for it and now I relate to people on a more real level. I learned not to have a stick up my ass and was humbled by doing things I suck at. As many times as I fall on my face, I get up and come back in the ring and punch harder and it gives me more to sing about. I have so much more creativity in me and I no longer harness it. I'm letting it out and I have found that the Christine I was hiding for so long, 'the Chiki' in me, is the woman that I admire.
