Editorial Reviews:

And what a swanky, swirling, sophisticated happy hour it is! A mingling mélange of smooth grooves and chilled tracks from beginning to end. Evolve has a superb and intelligent recording here; one that makes even the most blasé music enthusiast sit up and take notice with its rich instrumentation and arrangements featuring killer drum programming and loops, trumpet, flugelhorn and keyboards, as well as brilliant lyrical notions and outstanding vocals from the sultry Margo Reymundo and intriguing nu-rap from Tantrum. The man behind the evolution of Evolve? Only the coolest Brit in California with a name to match, Red Broad. Red's work on HAPPY HOUR IN THE GENE POOL is deep and poignant, yet shallow enough to wade in with friends while sipping cocktails. Evolve is genre defining in my opinion; a standard by which other artists should measure their work and quality. In a time when the music industry requires life support, Evolve has just shot an injection of clever and unique into its veins and offers the consumer a reason to buy the entire project, not just a tune. More please! More music that appeals to the senses and packages itself in a stunning, shiny digipak that you never want to put down. SmoothLounge.com invites you to Evolve.~SANDY SHORE

This is a very impressive debut record. “Happy Hour In The Gene Pool” will someday be synomonous with chill-out electronica. Superb downtempo breaks are layered with thick heavy bass backbeats while the hi-hats and snares clack to an effective tempo. The production is absolutely excellent with smooth highs and plenty of mids to get the tweeters pulsing. Intelligent electronic music for the lounge generation. - J-Sin, Smother Magazine (www.smother.net)

Outstanding ! Brilliant ! Sublime & Sexy...a Monster Groove. The GrooveTone Lounge of Liquid Soundz places "Happy Hour in the Gene Pool" as a "TOP Shelf" Lounge Groove. It is a rare thing indeed to find an album with so much well crafted sonic finesse. How many discs do you own, where nearly every track has such artistic clarity that you wind up listening to the whole thing whenever you put it on...without reaching for the next track button. This is an outstanding work...book me a room and bring on the chilled Martinis...I'm not going anywhere. Bravo! GT

Red Broad has developed his theories for music production. Is it “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny?” I don’t think so. Is it “survival of the fittest?” Probably not. These descriptions have been created to illustrate the theory behind Darwin’s “natural selection.” Some have called it evolution, but even Charles avoided the use of this term in his seminal “Origin of Species” because it implies an idea of perfection. In reality, Darwin’s ideas were meant to describe a process of change. Red Broad has perfectly chosen the name Evolve to describe his method for writing music that is a process of change. And, on Happy Hour in the Gene Pool each track moves and morphs to create a unique musical organism. With Evolve, Red has perfected an experiment where many styles of music are assembled together that makes this first release stand out amongst the human population of electronic acts. Red is an English transplant who has made contact with some interesting collaborators On Happy Hour in the Gene Pool, and there is no lack of creativity here. It breathes of many different life forms from the triphop sounds of “Isolated, Detached & Remote” to the nujazz rebirth found on “Couldn’t Be More Wrong.” On the latter, we find the subtle, sultry vocals of Margo Reymundo that carries this track through a metamorphosis of sorts. This track is ripe for martini hour. Her wealth of vocal experience shines on “Couldn’t Be More Wrong” and on “The Way Back”, and the listener begins to believe that Evolve is an intelligent species. Happy Hour is further complimented with the nice beat work found on “Bushwhacked,” a name that we Americans might find humor in. “Bushwhacked” moves sinuously with a heavy bass line that carries an air of spy sophistication. The gene pool continues to remain diverse on this release as we hear the urban influence of Tantrum. “By Definition: Cool” and “Mice on the Ice” are his offspring, and Tantrum provides an edge with rap against hip-hop sounds that add to a well-rounded selection on Happy Hour. Other downtempo tracks like “Mellow” and “Rusty Ferrari” have interesting use of brass that is sometimes wrongly overlooked in the world of electronic music. Throughout the 60 minutes on Happy Hour, we find an eclectic mix of electronic sounds infused with horns, guitar, lyrics, and great production work. Each track is an “evolutionary” process of musical “creation,” two words often considered polar opposites in the modern world of science and religion. But in music, Evolve proves that their process for writing the music on Happy Hour in the Gene Pool can cross any divide and create something beautiful. ~Chris D. (Slackline Radio)

Evolve's Happy Hour In the Gene Pool is a must have for lovers of downtempo, trip hop and jazz laced lounge grooves. What could easily be called the Evolution of Downtempo & Lounge for me is more like the perfection of chilled and downbeat grooves. Harvested at just the right time Evolve taps into that euphoric nerve center that makes everything alright. The album's mix of jazzy lounge grooves sprinkled with some hip hop flavor make this CD a clear favorite for those wanting to chill after a long days work or anytime. Mixed to perfection, the CD carries you smoothly with style and subtleness and just as a finely mixed drink hits you with an intoxicating buzz that will make you smile and yearn for more. Excellent production quality and musical arrangements highlight this CD and attest to the skills of producer, mixer and song writer Red. Fresh food and great recipes are nice on their own, but it takes a talented chef to bring the right components together mixed and seasoned to perfection. Red's supporting cast, Chris Barron, Freddy Kron, Evan Avery Margo Reymundo and Tantrum certainly do just that. And this is just their debut CD!! --DJ Dub Ninja, Subsonic Temple (www.subsonictemple.com)

Evolve's chilled out grooves and breaks are produced by Red. Their debut outing, Happy Hour In The Gene Pool is a delightful blend of lounge pop, subtle beats, found sound, and mellow jazz influences, a lounge lizards idea of heaven on Earth. The overall vibe is predominantly mellow, and the arrangements ooze sophistication and depth. Singer/co-writer Margo Reymundo features on two tracks contributing her distinctive raspy, Billy Holiday-esque jazzy vocal stylings to "Couldn't Be More Wrong" and "The Way Back", with rapper Tantrum providing the testosterone on "By Definition: Cool" and "Mice On The Ice". Happy Hour In The Gene Pool manages to stay focused and coherent throughout it’s sixty plus minutes while providing enough diversity to maintain interest, and enough depth to sustain repeated listenings. Most of the tracks presented here are ripe for the plucking by nearly any of the hundreds of chill out mix albums being released. The album is equally enjoyable to chill out to whether on headphones, at a cocktail party or on a long drive. Happy Hour In The Gene Pool contains a little something for every electronica music fan, which, in this case, is a good thing.

Adviruz is the artist psedonym of Istanbul’s Pinar Gurcan, whose growing passion for sound is translated through her music. Since an early age, she has been listening and mimicking opera singers, writing melodies, songs and poems in which she spoke her mind and reflected her soul. All of which are evident on "Nightly Sounds", an 8 track album which is the equivilent of having a glimpse into a diary, learning of love lost, gained, a snapshot of the human condition from which we can all draw experience... All of these things are developed musically into minimalistic glitch, noise, idm, experimental music and microsounds, its influences reminiscent of work by artists like Tujiko Noriko, Mira Calix, Plaid and Björk.

Adviruz and Section 27 present "Nightly Sounds", an intricately woven and rewarding musical tapestry. Available now for free download.

[S27-027] Various Artists - SECTIONED

To celebrate our first 27 releases on Section 27 Netlabel, we proudly present to you "Sectioned", a compilation of 27 tracks, amounting to 2 hours across two discs of twisted electronic beats, discordant melodies, haunting passages, broken ambience, bending senses of time and space, microscopic glitches, pounding bass frequencies, sounds between sounds, the human voice and the audible sensation of music dissolving in acid. This is the sound of your mind's eye. This is the sound of the Sectioned... Strap yourself in and enjoy the experience.

Also features a 75 minute bonus disc "Sectioned : Nonimxs", including 9 remixes of selected Section 27 artists by Nonima and 2 original tracks created by Silent Snow and Nina Kardec using existing Nonima tracks.

[S27-026] Nonima & theAudiologist - Almost Tomorrow
(Glitch, Ambient, Downtempo, IDM)

..
Click image to go to download page

Almost Tomorrow is the third full length collaboration album from Section 27 Netlabel founders Tam Ferrans and Andrew Paterson, under their Nonima & theAudiologist guise. This time around the sound is more melodic, and has a definite feeling of a complete and more mature sound than heard on the previous LP's "Dystopian Battle Hymns" and "Ceremony After Amputation". If you are familiar with their individual projects you may even be in for a slight surprise, as the tracks are not as beat driven like before, but are more atmospheric and sound, well... "bigger". In its 75 minutes, Almost Tomorrow takes you on a trip from the digital rain-soaked cavernous scraping in "Thoughtograph", the ethereal beat jittering of "The Colour of Rain", intercepted transmissions from unknown places in "Com-Intercept", "Ganzfeld"s huge yet strangely insect-like beats until everything you knew comes crashing around you in "Almost Tomorrow". Burning pianos, glitched out soundscapes and intricately programmed beatplay, this may well be their best work to date. Consider it the soundtrack to a rainy overcast day, but with just that glimmer of sunshine peeking from the clouds. "Almost Tomorrow" wears its heart on its sleeve.
