About me:
Chinaman's Chance
"When you don't stand a chance in hell, you have a Chinaman's Chance. Our story begins as Sing, a young Chinese immigrant, turns this famous saying upside down in his desperation to get justice, and equal treatment for his Chinese railroad co-workers and avenge his brother's death, while trying to adopt his new American values. Sing is falsely accused of murdering a young woman and is forced to run. He overcomes many life threatening obstacles, by benefiting from a "Chinaman's Chance." Along the way he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Mexican girl who saves his life. In hot pursuit is Charles, leader of the bounty hunters, who wants to protect his son, who is the real killer, from facing justice. harles' motto is "Dead men tell no tales."
Written from an Asian perspective, Writer/Director Aki Aleong successfully blends historical fact with fictional characters in bringing to our attention the significant importance of Chinese immigrant laborers and their everlasting impact on America. His unique and innovative approach examines this time period through the eyes of the many different races who built America. Their unique personal hardships have never been portrayed honestly in American cinema, this is mostly due to the macho, domineering American Cowboy points of view which defined the generic Westerns.
Chinaman's Chance is an exciting, historical, adventure/western, as well as a coming of age story that is full of action with strong social elements. Few Westerns have dealt with the great importance of Chinese laborers, building seventeen railroads and working under extreme sub-human conditions. The Chinese laid the foundation for a United, modern America. Thousands died. Twenty thousand pounds of their bones were later returned to their motherland.
Chinaman's Chance is a classic American morality film, depicting the life of the Chinese "Coolie" and others faced in the 1800's. As a consequence of racial and religious discrimination against the Chinese, the United States Congress with California's pressure, passed the Exclusion Act of 1882. The Exclusion Act of 1882 stated "the coming of Chinese laborers endangers the good order of the territory." The Chinese were the only people in history ever specifically targeted and banned from entering the United States.
