Derrick A. Harris understands the value of life. Derrick was born in Washington DC, and raised in its Metropolitan area. Chink started writing at the age of 13, not necessarily to rap music, but to anything that was troubling him. It was just one of his ways of expressing his feelings and emotions.
Placed in an unstable environment, Derrick became involved with the street activity and a lifestyle that he thought would only provide two options, death or prison. Chink faced tremendous obstacles that started at the foundation of his adolescent years. While receiving poor guidance in his life, subsequently he felt that in order to survive he would have to participate in the business of selling illegal narcotics. The fast paced lifestyle was more than what Chink actually wanted, but when all you were ever told is that you would never amount to anything, and surrounded by a heavily drug infested area all the odds usually out weigh the evens.
Derrick began to realize that God has always protected him, and walked away from the street game by rededicating his life to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the summer of 1997. Chink stated, “God sent the right people at the right time and planted a seed that would literally save my life. Now I will give back, share the wealth and knowledge by being a direct reflection of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
By this time Chink would take his music career and excelled to another level, and would become one of the greatest rap artists in the DC area. “Growing up was hard, I got a second chance, that’s why I’m very passionate with what I do. In so many ways I’m just here to tell them, Through Christ, we gonna make it. Some understand me, some don’t but God knows and it is he that can only judge me!” Said Chink
