See the blog update above for a brief summary of what is happening at the Chipuli Foundation, and in Malawi at the start of 2009.
Check out the videos to see what we do: 'The Chipuli Project in Sound and Motion' (press play in the screen below and see the videos section) gives a summary of our first project, we currently have 13 more on the go.
The Chipuli Foundation was formed in 2002/3 and is a charitable organisation delivering water and sanitation projects in Northern rural Malawi, Africa.
The foundation was formed by Alec Martin and Jonathan Hunter based in the UK and our in-country project manager Simon Chirambo. Lee Sayer has now joined the team to assist, and we have lots of other supporters including www.highonadventure.co.uk which donates 5% of profits to the Chipuli Foundation.
Our first project, ran from 2004 - 2006 and consisted of the provision of a new borehole for water supply and approximately 20 VIP latrines using a novel 'double' design which resulted in unprecedented uptake of sanitation by the villages who stated 'we wish to be seen as a role model for rural sanitation in the region'.
The Foundation is currently running 15 projects also in rural northern Malawi in the areas surrounding the villages of Boti, Bindubindu & Mzito. These projects involve the provision of new borehole water supplies to approximately 2000 villagers, and the re-instatement of abandoned boreholes in further locations which will provide sustainable and safe water supplies for over 4000 people.
In the current phase of works, all major civil works have been completed and our community mobilisation and trianing phases are currently operting to enanbl eto village water committees to be formed and take over managment of the resources.
The Chipuli Foundation believe in delivering the maximum that we can. Our UK and Malawi stuff donate all their time without charge and the vast majority of sponsorship generated is spent in country on drilling, materials and community training - At least 90% of all funds raised have been delivered in target communities on drilling and construction and our government approved training courses - bricks, mortar and life saving training.
