This is LAYLA - can you adopt this cutie-pie? Hi! My name is Layla and i am a super sweet little lady. I am kinda camera shy, so these photos don't quite do me justice. Here is what my foster mom says about me: "Layla's a really sweet dog, but very shy and timid, so she probably won't do well in a house with young kids. She needs time to get to know people, not a huge amount, she warmed up to me within 4 or 5 hours, but it does take some patience.
I think that she could function in a multiple dog house or a house with cats but she can also be in a house where she is the only animal, the center of attention. She interacts with dogs in the dog park and has played with other dogs in a home where she had an overnight stay. We're working on the house training (she goes outside most of the time and sometimes uses a wee wee pad) and she could use some obedience training to help build her confidence. Layla is very loyal and loving; she is smart and loves to cuddle. We are trying the commands with her and she is starting to respond .She will sit (sometimes), stay next to us while stopped the street, leave the room and get off the furniture when instructed. She is making improvements. She is trainable, she just needs someone with time to do it! Layla is an exceptionally loving dog who loves to snuggle and sleep under the covers. She is always happy when we come home and showers us with attention. She is also very smart. She knows all the stores in the neighborhood, several tricks and can balance on her back 2 legs indefinitely. Layla would ideally be a good match for someone who has the time to crate train her. She most likely was never properly trained. She is a really happy sweet dog but she does have a tendency to get scared easily (of buses, people on the street, sudden movements) but we are working on getting her used to these things.
I think it is important to say that her new owner should not be a man or a household with small children. I believe she would be comfortable in a home with more than one person. I have a full-time job as head of the copy department at an advertising firm during the day, mostly being an editor. Yes, I work in an office with my green hair and tattoos, in lots of high heels. ;) I also teach kickboxing and vinyasa yoga (there's my yin AND yang) among other things for crunch in the evenings after work. & I run around Prospect Park 5ish days a week. I'm a sagittarius: honest, brutal, blunt - sometimes to a fault. By going vegan for ONE MONTH, you'd save:
* 8000 gallons of water
* a quarter acre of land
* a quarter ton of soil erosion
* a half ton of polluting animal manure
* the CO2 equivalent of 270 pounds of greenhouse gases
* the energy equivalent of burning 7 gallons gasoline
* 160 pounds of crops wasted on farmed animals
* innocent animals from unimaginable suffering
* Raising animals for food causes more water pollution in the U.S. than any other industry because animals raised for food produce 130 times the excrement of the entire human population---87,000 pounds per second! Much of the waste from factory farms and slaughterhouses flows into streams and rivers, contaminating water sources.
* Each vegetarian saves an acre of trees every year! More than 260 million acres of U.S. forest have been cleared to grow crops to feed animals raised for meat, and another acre of trees disappears every eight seconds. The tropical rain forests are also being destroyed to create grazing land for cattle. Fifty-five square feet of rain forest may be razed to produce just one quarter-pound burger.
* Of all raw materials and fossil fuels used in the U.S., more than one-third is used to raise animals for food. Producing a single hamburger patty uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car twenty miles and enough water for seventeen showers.
* Of all agricultural land in the U.S., 87 percent is used to raise animals for food---that's 45 percent of the total landmass in the U.S.
* More than half the water consumed in the U.S. is used to raise animals for food. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat. A totally vegetarian diet requires 300 gallons of water per day, while a meat-eating diet requires more than 4,000 gallons of water per day.
* In the U.S., animals raised for food are fed more than 80 percent of the corn we grow and more than 95 percent of the oats. The world's cattle alone consume a quantity of food equal to the caloric needs of 8.7 billion people---more than the Earth's entire human population.
