   About Marcy Dermansky

Praise for TWINS

The New York Times Book Review called TWINS "a brainy, emotionally sophisticated bildungsroman-for-two." The novel was selected as an editor's choice pick.

"Dermansky gives her misfits real dignity and avoids psycho-social clichés she neatly captures the girls suburban high school world with every telling detail. Sometimes despairing, sometimes blackly humorous, always engrossing and thoroughly original. A wonderful debut." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Twins is spectacular, weird, extraordinarily real, and funny in ways they dont have names for." -- Jerry Stahl, author of Permanent Midnight

"If you thought your childhood was twisted, you aint seen nothing yet. Marcy Dermansky weaves a spellbinding tale. Grade: A" -- Genre Magazine

"TWINS will bruise your heart and make you laugh out loud all at once." -- New York Newsday

"Raw, extraordinary...A dark, heartbreaking tale about adolescents trying to survive." -- Huntsville Times

"Compelling, dark, and like a traffic accident that you try to look away from, only to find your gaze returning with odd fascination. This well-written book gives readers a voyeuristic, insiders glimpse into the lives of not only twins, but teenagers. Though at times uncomfortable, the novel is comically and darkly entertaining." -- Denver Rocky Mountain News

"Startingly beautiful... easily the most detailed, disturbing, and lovable oddball romance youll ever read." -- Frederick Barthelme, author of Elroy Nights

"Who would have known that the perils of being a twin are also the perils of life? Marcy Dermansky has captured, in her funny and honest book, what it takes to survive those perils, and what it means to live that life." -- John Haskell, author of American Purgatorio

"Twins is a witty and slyly subversive take on the teenage American dream. Its narrated in turn by both girls and is particularly worth reading for Sues hilariously vitriolic abuse of virtually everyone she meets. ****" -- Mail on Sunday (London)

About Marcy

Marcy Dermansky always knew she wanted to be a writer. She began making up stories in elementary school, writing about a sensitive standard poodle and a rebellious goldfish who wanted out of his school. After graduating from Haverford College, she headed to San Francisco, only to discover that numerous young women with degrees in English and dreams of writing fiction had the exact same idea. For five years, she moved up from unsatisfying temp jobs to unsatisfying full-time administrative work, before packing up and moving to the amazement of many (including a stunned UPS man) to Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She received her MA in fiction, studying with Frederick Barthelme and Mary Robison at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Marcy is a MacDowell Fellow and the winner of the 2002 Smallmouth Press Andre Dubus Novella Award, and the 1999 Story Magazine Carson McCullers short story prize. Her stories have been published in numerous literary journals, including McSweeneys, The Alaska Quarterly Review, and The Indiana Review, and included in the anthology Love Stories: A Literary Companion to Tennis. She is a film critic for About.com. She lives in Astoria, New York. She is not an identical twin.

Hi Marcy! I adored Away From Her - Sarah Polley did a magnificent job adapting the story.

What are you writing these days? Because I'm waiting to read it!
