I make jewellery and glass giftware from my own workshop in Nottingham, UK.
The main materials I use are silver art clay, fusing glass and dichroic glass.
I pre buy the base materials and some findings to make all my jewellery items.
I buy the glass in large sheets. I hand cut each piece of glass to make jewellery
and glassware. Most jewellery and glassware items are made up with several layers
of glass sandwiched together. Every piece of glass is hand cleaned and then
fused in a kiln at very high temperatures.
The kiln is then allowed to rapidly cool before it holds its temperature to
begin the annealing process. Every piece of glass is slowly annealed in the
kiln to relieve internal stresses following the high fusing temperatures. Glass
that has not been annealed is liable to crack or break. I ensure that all my
glass pieces are properly annealed and then allowed to cool to room temperature
before the kiln door is opened.
Working with silver art clay is something I absolutely love. The effects you
can create are amazing with the clay. Silver art clay consists of pure silver
dust mixed with a non-toxic organic binder. You create your object with the
clay and then fire it in a kiln. The binder burns out leaving you with real
pure fine 99.9% silver. When the piece comes out of the kiln it requires polishing
and finishing.
