About me:
I'm just a guy that's happily married, loves family, making music, and helping sharing my years of knowledge about the music industry. This is one of two reason I posted this profile. The other reason is to keep up with the kids in NC (DADDY LOVES YA!).
My name is Mo James. I’m fairly sure that you’re curious as to what qualifies me to give advice and instruction on the subject of Audio Production and Recording. Frankly, If I were on your side of the table I’d be wondering the same thing.
In short, I’ve been in and around music for well over 30 years. I started messing around with musical instruments about the age of 10 in my father’s church. First the bass guitar, then rhythm guitar, and eventually piano/keyboard.
When I was about 20 years old I met a slightly older gentleman that introduced me to world of Studio Recording. He was the manager of the store where I worked, and commented constantly on my singing voice (I used to sing along with every song that played on the store radio). He expressed an interest in recording an album on me, and that he would foot the bill; a deal that I couldn’t pass up, of course.
So, in each studio session I watched as he alone created complete instrumental tracks to the songs I had written. I never new that ONE GUY could create all this music by himself!
In the year we spent recording my album, I was constantly asked by other studio producers to use my voice to sing back-up hooks and harmonies for their projects, which paid quite nicely, but the education that came with all of this was priceless. This is how I learned about “stacking” vocals.
A few years later I took what I had learned from my mentor and began creating music arrangements for myself, as he had taught me. By the time I was about 25 I had not sold a million records, but made a good living. However, my singing career began to take a back seat to the request I got to produce other people’s music for them. In 1993 I built a recording studio in my house and proceeded to record many of the local aspiring artists that I was already making music for. I’ve also had the opportunity to record and produce in many other studios over the years.
