SCIENTISTS UNDER ATTACK
Árpád Pusztai and Ignacio Chapela have two things in common. They are distinguished scientists and their careers are in ruins. Both scientists choose to look at the phenomenon of genetic engineering. Both made important discoveries. Both of them are suffering the fate of those who criticise the powerful vested interests that now dominate big business and scientific research. Statements made by scientists themselves prove that 95% of the research in the
area of genetic engineering is paid by the industry. Only 5% of the research is independent. The big danger for freedom of science and our democracy is evident. Can the public – we all – still trust our scientists? This is a documentary thriller about how Agro-Chemical multinational corporations victimize international scientists to prevent them from publishing their scary findings. Admission is free, donations accepted. Beer and brats will be available at the bar. Doors open at 7 pm.

We All Fall Down: The American Mortgage Crisis
Filmed over a twelve-month period, from Rochester, NY and Cleveland, to Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego, WE ALL FALL DOWN also shows how an out-of-control "mortgage machine" has today led to home foreclosures nationwide, featuring interviews with families who have been devastated, as loan defaults and evictions spread from the poor to middle-class sectors of the populace, in turn creating millions of abandoned and disintegrating properties in neighborhoods and cities throughout the U.S. Their emotionally moving stories reveal the all-too-real personal consequences for Americans caught up in this financial spiral.
This screening is co-sponsored by the Free Press.
Admission is free, donations accepted. October 20 7:00 PM at Studio 35
Strong Coffee
The Story of Cafe Femenino
STRONG COFFEE tells the story of Cafe Femenino - a revolutionary idea that is helping people in need all over the world. Cafe Femenino beans are the first coffee beans grown entirely by women farmers. Remarkably, the Cafe Femenino project is helping to change long-established attitudes and weaken the grip of machismo in remote farming communities. In response, a cultural shift is taking place. There is more equality between women and men, abuse and violence towards women are decreasing, and the quality of life in these regions is improving. To better understand this phenomenon, a small group of coffee roasters travel to Northern Peru to meet some of the impoverished women farmers who grow this high quality, certified organic, fair trade coffee. The film follows the roasters as they travel to remote villages to see how coffee beans are grown, picked, processed, and sold. We learn about the Peruvian women's struggles, their courage and incredible achievements, and meet some of the remarkable people involved in the formation of the Cafe Femenino project. STRONG COFFEE also shows how Cafe Femenino helps women in our own communities. The documentary takes a peek at the billion dollar coffee industry from the perspective of Cafe Femenino and provides an interesting look at the power of the consumer dollar. STRONG COFFEE: The Story of Cafe Femenino is an uplifting, motivating, and inspiring film. This film screening has been co-sponsored by Stauf's. Admission is just $5. October 15 6:30 PM at Studio 35

With the reality of a nuclear threat more and more present - especially because of recent U.S. politics – Maki, the granddaughter of a Hiroshima bombing survivor, strives to keep the memory of the horror alive so that history is not repeated.
Evelyn, originally from the Marshall Islands and exiled in Honolulu, is the adopted daughter of a woman irradiated by a U.S. thermonuclear bomb. Not only has she lost her home, she lives with the nightmare of genetic malformations and cancers at the forefront of her mind.
Mauréa, a young, Tahitian, anti-nuclear activist, who inherited her passion for activism from her father, struggles in a society where mentioning anything nuclear is taboo. Through Mauréa’s journey we discover a country torn apart by nuclear colonization and an environment rendered vulnerable to plutonium, one of the strongest poisons in the world.
In New Zealand, an anti-nuclear country, we meet Annie. She walks in the shoes of her parents, heroic figures in the peace movement, and instrumental in the condemnation of arms by the International Court of Justice. Annie works to inspire youth towards activism and away from fear and complacency.
These young women introduce us to the film's themes: the rewriting of history for the purposes of political opportunism, the reality of new nuclear arms, planetary contamination, the anti-
missile shield program, and peace movements.
From Hiroshima, the Marshall Islands, Tahiti, and New Zealand, to Vienna, Washington D.C., and Vancouver we hear the accounts of scientists, media and political experts, activists, and, of course, the descendants - who cling to the hope that their testimony can free us from the threat of sudden destruction.

Hanh is an HIV-positive widow in Vietnam. Nada, a survivor of the Bosnian war. And Madame Urbain
works the slums of Bamako, Mali. Three very different lives. Three vastly different worlds. But they share something in common: Power. These ordinary women are each overcoming deep-seeded gender barriers to rise up and claim a voice in their societies. Through their empowerment and the ability to empower others, Hanh, Nada and Madame Urbain are sparking remarkable and unprecedented changes. Fighting AIDS. Rebuilding communities. Educating girls. Through compelling verite’-style narratives, “A Powerful Noise” takes you inside the lives of these women to witness their daily challenges and their significant victories over poverty and oppression. Their stories are both personal and unique, yet illustrate larger issues affecting millions of marginalized women worldwide.
Many films emphasize the glaring differences between developing and developed nations, creating an “us/them” perspective that minimizes the relevance to Western audiences. However, this documentary captivates viewers because it speaks to the common aspirations, the common abilities that all women share. “A Powerful Noise” is a meditation on the inherent potential of women to change the world. “A Powerful Noise”. The impact of one voice. The power of many.

A Sense Of Wonder
The film is an intimate and poignant reflection of Rachel Carson's life as she emerges as America's most successful advocate for the natural world. A Sense of Wonder was shot in HD by Oscar-winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler at Carson's cottage on the coast of Maine. Rachel Carson has been called the "patron saint" of the modern environmental movement. The Atlantic has listed her as one of the 40 most influential figures in American history. Praising Carson and her work, Al Gore wrote that, “without [Silent Spring], the environmental movement might have been long delayed or never developed at all.”
