Sounds Like
I play Old Time, Traditional Bluegrass and Celtic music.
I've been playing music since I was a little kid. I started out in 4th grade back in a suburb of Buffalo, New York playing the violin but switched to the trumpet in 5th grade (I figured it was much more "macho" instrument) and kept on playing that and French Horn all through school and even went to college to get my degree in Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, Ill. Sure, I played guitar and sang Bob Dylan songs (as well as all the requisite folk songs of the 60's) but it wasn't until I was 27 (1974) and living in California that I found I had some extra time and money on my hands and just so happened to have a banjo (why I had one I'll never remember). So I figured I'd take some lessons. Two years later my employer (mentor) and good friend, John Pedersen owner of Amazing Grace Music in San Anselmo, Ca., showed me how to play the fiddle, and fix stringed instruments (he's one of the best in Northern Cal. on both) and I've been playing Old Time, Celtic and Bluegrass music and fixing stringed instruments ever since. I played in "THE ACME STRING ENSEMBLE"/"LONESOME HOLLER STRING BAND" for the past twenty years and more plus the Celtic band "DOCKSIDE", (originals and Celtic music from all over the place. Also check out "THE ROUND OAK STRING BAND'S" story in my blog section. It's pretty interesting...
I also make Bodhran Tippers. What??? They are a certain kind of drum stick for the Irish drum. I lost my workshop space and my bodhrantippers.org web site is not functional right now but I will put up some pics of the tippers so you can get an idea of what they are if you don't know...
A lot of people seem to think that bluegrass/old time and celtic music is simple music. Maybe it is since it utilizes only three or four chords in any given tune or song but the music is so emotive and soulful, so deep and heartfelt, so downhome that it spoke to me right away and I haven't changed my mind since. I love it and I'll keep playing it 'til I can't anymore...
I've been working at the same music store in Northern Ca. since 1987. At least the oldest document we have here with my signature on it is from 1987 so I guess it's been since then. Could be longer for that matter. Anyway, I purchase all the printed material (over ten thousand books), do the guitar (and related instruments) repair and take care of the customers. Nice job but I think I've been here long enough, except I don't how to do anything else. Oh well...
I've been very happily married to my best friend since 1997. We've had some great times and some tragedy in our lives (pretty much what life is all about) but all in all it's been great and continues to be so as each day passes!...
Take care all!!!
