Chris Cawthray, drummer
ex/ leader of jambands hearsay (five indie releases 1992-1998) and relax with trudy (1999-2002); drummer/percussionist-for-hire for a variety of artists in music and dance (ongoing); began solo projects in 2001 with his first CD move: music for modern dance and creative movement
That release has been followed by an eclectic string of albums featuring both Chris' regular working bands and one-off lineups, all of which are currently available through major digital retailers such as iTunes and emusic.com
In 2004, Chris formed what has been his most productive ensemble, cc3 (chris cawthray trio). cc3 has released one recording (2007's "(pamplemousse)") and performed hundreds of gigs. The core lineup from 2004-2008 was cc, Mike Pelletier (bs) and Eric Boucher (kbd). In 2008 Chris debuted a new cc3 featuring Glen Hall on saxophone and Simeon Abbott on electric piano, as well as incorporating his own vocals into the band. This lineup has been touring in Ontario, and has recorded a new album, scheduled for a late summer 2009 release.
In 2006, Chris began performing in a collaborative group with New York City-based guitarist Rob Price. That collaboration eventually formed the band CPZ, with tenor saxophonist Ed Zankowski; CPZ has been playing regular shows in Ontario, Canada and stateside in New York and Massachusetts in addition to releasing an eponymous live recording in 2008. In 2009, CPZ has been "CP", with Chris Cawthray and Rob Price performing duo shows in New York City, including a set at the Downtown Music Gallery.
In 2005, Chris released a self-produced DVD of solo drumming, clips of which can be seen on YouTube now. In 2008, he resumed this project and has been performing at various venues in Toronto. The project is currently focused on developing a repertoire of Bob Dylan songs arranged for solo drums and voice.
In addition to these projects, Chris is a busy freelancer on both the creative and commercial music scenes in Toronto, leading the funk band HOT BUTTERED SOUL, and working with Chip Yarwood and Celena Carroll in the world/electro/roots trio SeeWhySound.
