"Chris Compton is a songwriting chameleon, equally able at penning power-pop hooks as he is ingeniously off-kilter folk tunes" -P. Wall, The Free Times

"This singer/songwriter produces canny points of reference in songs such as the springy "Girls in Boys Clothes"... Compton's alt-folk is a contrast to Columbia's frequently mundane singer-songwriter fare" -Otis Taylor, The State Picks of the Week

""Well, this might be a first. Instead of finding the typical bio fare that tries to convince the visitor that the musician in question has somehow found a way to use age-old techniques to arrive at a "unique" or "cutting-edge" sound, I found quite the opposite at Compton's MySpace page. Rather, his profile is a critique of everything from his guitar playing and singing to his lyrics and composition skills. Perhaps Compton's scheme is to lower expectations so the songs streaming from the MySpace player will impress. They do. And not because of some clever deception, but because Compton has taken all his imperfections and made something perfect. Recalling the classic styles of Harry Nilsson and indie-pop of Jens Lekman or Stephin Merritt, Compton has made me a believer." -K. Foster, The Free Times

Guitar playing: moderate to good strumming but perhaps too percussive and unrefined, finger-picking fair but limited to variations of only two styles, shows promise in more frequent use of picked notes as opposed to full chords.
Vocals:good, has lost its tendency towards affectation over the years but still lacks the subtlety that could be achieved with a more breathy approach, range is fair with a rich lower register that often goes unused because of a preference for high voices in other singers.
Melody: extremely self-conscious of melody which is most often a good thing except when occasional flourishes or falsettos make a song filling and hard to digest.
Lyrics: predominate tendency toward first person, striking absence of any love songs, recurring images that must be symbols for the author and a dogged bent on rhyme.
Other instrumentation: mediocre performances on woodwinds and keyboard-employed mainly as coloration to enhance the song
