About me:

As a career freelance recording engineer, the leap to studio design, installation and consulting was not a big one. In fact; initially I was approached by several of my existing recording clients to help them setup or upgrade their own production facilities. It was a great fit because the trust we had established recording together along with my knowledge of session flow, equipment, and studio layouts translated perfectly into the design, installation and installation realm. Over the years I have designed and/or installed several other large format and project studios all over the country. By utilizing the experiences gained by spending the majority of my time using recording studios and engineering for many producers who have different styles of recording, I am able to have conversations with other engineers about their studios’ issues, or new studio’s needs as an engineer, then apply the information gathered during those discussions towards helping them create a recording studio that fits their needs, as well as the needs of their clients. Truly a “one size fits one” design.
I also have purchased a large amount of equipment over the years, both for myself and for the various design, install and consulting clients; which has led to great relationships with equipment brokers and manufacturers. These relationships play a vital role in creating studios on a budget by helping identify and find the exact equipment needed, in great condition, and at a reduced price. For me, it’s all about bang for the buck, and spending money wisely.
Specializing in blending vintage gear and methods with today's technology, I focus on taking the time to learn what makes you (the owner/engineer) tick, and then design a layout that fits your methods, and your clients needs, along with helping you carve out the ever-illusive niche in your current market by helping to figure out what will set your studio apart from your competition and attract the artists you’d like to record. I also can stick around after the installation phase to watch you do a few sessions and help you adjust to the new setup as an engineer, something no other designer offers. Plus, I strive to stay on or below budget, and most of all- create studios that inspire artists and engineers to, well....be creative.
Whether you own a small project studio that’s experiencing some growing pains, or a large format commercial facility that is looking to solve some current issues - and anything in between- get in touch with me; I’d love to help. My rate structure is designed to pay for itself by saving you more than I charge for my services, so what do you have to loose? Feel free to give me a call at (615) 476-6272 or email at cym@mindspring .com to see how I can help you get the studio you've always wanted.
Testimonials:
"Chris Mara has been an invaluable aide to our studio. Without his expertise and knowledge, we would not be in the enviable position we are in today. Our studio is stable, low maintenance, has a great workflow
and best of all, sounds great!! 100% recommend”- Marshall Green Owner/Engineer of Marshman Studios.
