“I can’t speak highly enough about Chris Pahlow and the dedication he has to his craft. Chris has a very healthy work ethic and always brings something unique and refreshing to the table. Of all the up and coming filmmakers I’ve worked with, Chris is by far the most professional, disciplined, and encouraging of them all.” - Clayton Jacobson (Director of "Kenny")
Chris Pahlow is an award winning Director currently working for Melbourne studio Karate School Films. His striking and unique work boasts a rich diversity, stemming from his experience directing both live action and animated productions in a wide range of styles & mediums. Chris’ roots as an indie filmmaker have taught him to be fearless, constantly experimenting and challenging norms. His work and professional attitude demonstrates a strong commitment to pursuing his creative vision and bringing each concept to full fruition. For Chris, concept & aesthetic are inseparable, a philosophy that is evident in both his film work and the talks he gives at film festivals and school workshops. His practical experience is supported by both his university study (Bachelor of Creative Arts with a Double Major in Visual Media & Creative Writing) and his work as an assistant & researcher for “Kenny” director Clayton Jacobson.
Chris first rose to prominence as part of the award winning and critically acclaimed D.I.Y Art Films – a three member indie production crew described as “the future of Australian Animation” by Malcom Turner (director of both the Melbourne & Australian International Animation Festivals). Together the crew produced and directed a number of short projects including “Fraught”, which took out Best Australian Film at MIAF 2007 and has toured extensively at festivals across the globe.
Following on from his success with D.I.Y Art, Chris collaborated with fellow Melbourne filmmaker David Shiyang Liu to direct “Neon Blue”, a short documentary created for the BBC World Service in 2008. Since then he has focused on pairing two of his greatest passions, film and music, reuniting with D.I.Y Art compatriots for “Supermarket Musical Massacre” before branching out to direct “Something Great”, the lead single for Melbourne song bird Bianca Chen.
In early 2009, Chris joined the experienced directors & producers at Karate School Films – a talented and fresh company who have crafted campaigns for Fox FM (Hamish & Andy), Suzuki, & Yarra Trams, and music videos for artists including Paul Kelly, & Nick Cave. Watch out for new work from Chris in 2009.
