Dj's are not Musicians. Be an Artist, the music has to come from somewhere!
It all began in 1989, when I was 8 years old. As long as I could remember, I've always been a night person. I would stay up late to draw and create things out of Lego's, meanwhile listening to late night Detroit Radio. At the time, I didn't realize what I was listening to (nor understood that I was living in a historical moment), but I knew that I loved it and wanted to be part of it. What I was listening to was Jeff Mills (aka The Wizard) spin deep electronic music on WJLB. It would always put me into a creative trance and I would become completely engulfed with whatever I was doing.
At the age of 13, I received my first instrument, an electric guitar. It wasn't a Synthesizer, but it was definitely the start of my passion for music. I taught myself how to play, and within a year (age 14), I was able to play by ear and had the ability to play anything I chose. That same year, I started to mess around with keyboards/Synthesizers at a local Music Store. I was tearing up keyboards that weren't even mine (The Nord Lead), and I soon realized that I needed to get one. Since the age of 8, I always had that under-lying passion for Electronic Music (heavily influenced by Jeff Mills), and this was my chance to finally capitalize on that artistic drive. At the age of 16, I was able to purchase my first Synthesizer, a Roland JX-305 GrooveSynth. After discovering the possibilities of a sequencer, I quickly utilized it and was then able to put my creativity and emotions into action.
Since then, I've been able to meet all of my idols and influences, and have even became close friends with one of Detroits favorite pioneers in the Detroit Underground, Brian Jeffries (aka DJ Godfather). I've listened to Brian since the age of 16 and I will always have respect & admiration for him. But the one event that exceeds them all, is when I met Jeff Mills at The Smart Bar in Chicago. It was a surreal moment, one that changed my life. We talked for about 10 minutes, as people, not musicians. Then, later in that year, Myself & Jeff Mills crossed paths once again. He came through to Detroit to do a special private event and I was fortunate enough to be able to attend it. Once again, I was able to socialize and interact with Jeff for a good amount of time. The best part was that he remembered meeting me in Chicago. Quite impressive since he meets thousands of people all over the world every year.
Then, during the same week that I was with Jeff Mills for the 2nd time, I met Trent Reznor. Overlapping the same time period during the 90's, Trent Reznor was also a major influence when it came to composing, and choosing to become a Live Performing Artist, such as actually using keyboards/synthesizers to deliver the music to the crowd. Being able to look him in the eye and shake his hand was truly a gratifying experience. -Chris Roland
