"Words can never contain as music does, the unsayable grace that cannot be defined. It leaps like light from mind to mind."

New Music Preview Sage, Kima, Chris, Aaron,
Rusty & Chukk @ Hookah Joe's
We've had a couple of special shows at Hookah Joe's recently. Sitar (and now pipa and kora) wizard, Aaron Kaz has been joining Kima, Sage and me along with Rusty James (tabla and percussion) and Chukk (mbira and percussion) for some really nice sets. #5 may be my favorite.
Some pictures from one of those nights were taken by our good friend Marion. Check them out here

New Music Preview August Hoerr with Tarab & Sage @ Hookah Joe's
...and here's some more...
It's always a special night when our friends come out to make music with us. The samples below are from a show a few months back when accordion wizard August Hoerr of Soora Gameela joined us at Hookah Joe's. Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3 Sample 4
I should have made up some fancy names for
the samples but it's late and I'm tired.
August Hoerr - Accordion, Rabel, Rebab
Sage - Voice, Percussion
Dagu - Percussion
Chris Stack - Bass, Keyboards, Lavta
Unto the furthest flood-brim look with me;
Then reach on with thy thought till it be drown'd.
Miles and miles distant though the last line be,
And though thy soul sail leagues and leagues beyond,—
Still, leagues beyond those leagues, there is more sea.
-Dante Gabriel Rossetti
This page is a place for me to bring various musical impulses out into the open air. It also serves as a scrapbook of sorts for the musical projects I've been working on.
I've created a separate page for the Hookah Joe's recordings. It's called Sunday Night Ensemble. Look below in my top friends section for a link to it. I've also got an electronica project germinating in the back of my mind. There may be a page for it coming soon.
Anyway... a bit of explanation of the music above.
The Maqam Kurd Study (for Amy) is a piece for oud and synthesizer(s). I've been drawn to the Maqam Kurd (Phrygian Mode) for the last few weeks and have done a bit of preliminary recording. I've got a bit more for solo oud in this scale that I may put up soon.
The Flute Experiment is an experiment in signal processing. I'm playing two flutes in this piece (not at the same time). One is a big, low shakuhachi/quena hybrid and the other is a Native American flute in the same scale, an octave higher. I'm running the flute through a couple magic boxes to get that dense, breathy sound.
The Inumbra Excerpt is a piece from a CD of piano music I recorded for my sister for Christmas.
Five Paths may wind up on the electronica page. It's an all-electronic piece. The title was (lamely) inspired by the 5/4 time signature it's in.
The photos and graphics in the slideshow above are pictures from Jerusalem Garden and Hookah Joe's, some obsolete flyers, CD cover artwork and other odds & ends. The video is a promotional video for Jerusalem Garden. I may be updating it soon.

Have you watched me playing Floyd Cramer's "Last Date" at the Grapevine Opry's 21st Anniversary yet? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwekg2GIGMA
It was the 1st time a theremin performed at the GV Opry and in the theatre where Willie Nelson and the Judds have also appeared.
The stage "conditions" weren't exactly theremin perfect but I had a blast!! So did the band the audience! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Catch John on the drums in the video.
