As sweet as their name and as raw as the sugar from which its made, the Chicago-based band Christian Collin and Molasses is leaving a trail of sweet-toothed fans in every city they play. With their roots firmly planted in traditional blues, Christian Collin and Molasses dont break the unwritten rules of the genre, but they do bend and move them, fusing these unwritten laws together to create a brand of rock-and-roll distinctively their own. Nowhere are these fusions clearer than on their September 2005 release, Molasses Disaster.
A band that defies classification, this ensemble of musicians is led by front-man Christian Collin whose versatile guitar playing takes center stage. His expressive and soulful playing on a Fender Stratocaster grounds the group while Michael Casey on harmonica, Michael Anderson on bass, Steve Nixon ..boards, and Joe Dorenbos on drums give Christian Collin and Molasses a solid, full sound.
Molasses Disaster, the groups sophomore release, has earned rave reviews from across the globe. Hailed by George P. Seedorff of the Detroit Blues Society as utterly enthralling, this album has propelled Christian Collin and Molasses into the national blues spotlight. From out of nowhere a blues great has emerged. Up until now it has always been my policy to reserve that term to Albert Collins, Albert King, BB King, Freddie King and Johnny Winter, Seedorff asserts. The masterful blues captured here by Christian Collin and company has caused me to uncharacteristically step way out on a limb and compare a newcomer with that most elite of private clubs, the five all time blues greats mentioned above.
While a comparison to the blues masters is right on target, Collins guitar playing extends far beyond traditional blues. His playing runs the musical gamut and when Christian Collin bends the strings of his guitar, his audiences can feel it deep down in their bones.
Christian Collin brings new hope to the blues world, writes Robert Noll of Precious Artists International. Tight band and grooves with heartfelt lyrics and a guitar that can testify!
And testify he does his guitar playing is only rivaled by his voice; a voice that can only be described as city-grit soulful and as honest as the lyrics he sings. Collins voice is a perfect match for his original compositions that eloquently and intelligently relate the perils of life, love, and the heartache that sometimes follows.
Not only does Christian Collin employ strong vocals and solid songwriting, but also a musical versatility unrivaled by any blues musicians of the new generation. Sliding gracefully some would say as smooth as molasses from genre to genre, Christian Collin and Molasses incorporate Motown, Southern rock, 70s hard rock, and Texas blues into their repertoire to create a musical exploration sure to delight the senses.
After ten years of work paying their dues on the bar circuit, Christian Collin and Molasses are now receiving the national recognition that has been so long in the making. Having garnered rave reviews from Molasses Disaster in both North America and Europe, this bands future glows brighter with every note.
