Memorial Day in Lancaster

They gathered in Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
when all said, to honour, those before, and the dead
A capital for just one day, long ago,
when congress had stopped over night

It was Memorial Day, a day of respect,
to remember the Battle of Gettysburg,
and so much in time, from step to step
The battle of North and South,
words Abraham Lincoln did express

An eternal light of sombre sights,
the light of the American Drum
Not for King and Country,
but for State and freedom to stand

This fight between family and foe,
not one war, but all wars
From an independence to civil conflict,
they gathered in Lancaster,
and across the United States
To honour in memory of love,
and a mirage of past hates


Memorial Day is a Holiday in the United States
observed in late May. Previously designated
Decoration Day, it was inaugurated in 1868 by
General John A Logan for the purpose of decorating
the graves of Civil War veterans and has
since become a day on which all war dead
in the United States are commemorated.
