About me:
Christopher Murray is a New York State licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Manhattan. He offers practical and results-oriented counseling based on the belief that insight creates motivation for taking concrete action to better one's life.
An award-winning graduate of Hunter College School of Social Work, Christopher has worked in the helping professions for over fifteen years. In that time, he has developed expertise in running groups, working with individuals, and creating programs to help people move forward in their lives, reach their goals, and achieve freedom from challenges like drug and alcohol dependence, smoking, a history of sexual abuse or creative blocks.
Christopher was a recipient of a 2007-2008 Charles H. Revson Fellowship for the Future of New York City at Columbia University, is on the board of directors of Honoring Our Journey, (a spiritual wellness organization), and the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America. He teaches substance abuse counselors at The Alcoholism Council of New York and is a consultant to the New York State Department of Health and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.
His work has been recognized with citations of achievement from the Brooklyn Borough President, The AIDS Institute, Brooklyn AIDS Task Force and the New York City Task Force on Medicaid Managed Care. He has been on the board of Body Positive, The Coalition for a Smoke Free City, on staff at the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (New York City Chapter), and Gay Men's Health Crisis. He has acted as a consultant to over a hundred social service agencies around the country including the Philadelphia Department of Health and The Inter-Tribal Council of Arizona. He publishes frequently on issues of personal growth, human development and creativity.

Who I'd like to meet:
Firmly based in the precepts of classical psychodynamic psychotherapy, my counseling work is informed by concepts from relational therapy, structural family therapy and cognitive behavioral theory.
Individual Psychotherapy:
Individual work proceeds with the understanding that clients are aware of the importance and necessity of resolving underlying conflicts in order to free energy and reach untapped potential. By clarifying unconscious patterns of thought and behavior, clients are able to make different choices and create new outcomes for their lives.
Group Therapy:
Group dynamics creates an ideal "laboratory" for understanding our relational patterns and habits. Group members make a commitment to show up for themselves and other members in order to offer support and model new behaviors.
Couples Counseling:
Couples benefit from structured time to discuss their relationship and practice new ways of communicating to reduce conflict.
Life Coaching:
A highly-focused and time-limited approach to setting goals and taking action.
