Chris Votek is a cellist, electric bassist, composer, and improviser active in the L.A. area. Born the son of a vintner in 1987, Votek grew up tending grape vines and playing rock music in Sonoma County, California. He absorbed an extensive variety of stylistic influences during his studies at the California Institute of the Arts (2005-2008) from playing Hindustani classical music, jazz, new music, gamelan, American folk, and Western classical music. Votek’s cello experience spans from through-composed chamber music to pure improvisation, and his approach to composition is structured around a technique of gradually refining improvised material into notated music.
