Chris Wallbank & The Cowards are a band from Wolverhampton, England. Chris Wallbank formed the band after leaving the previous band he had formed, Ripchord (who are now signed to 1965 Records). The band has a wide variety of musical influences including Irish folk, the early twentieth century music hall and britpop which has made the band appeal to a wide range of fans both young and old. Chris Wallbank writes the songs and plays acoustic guitar, with Pav Janda on lead, Leigh 'The Lad' Barton ..board and Richard Draper on Drums. The Cowards formed in summer 2006 and at first Chris Wallbank said that he wished the band to never play any live concerts and for the music to be heard by those not in the band only through studio recordings. However, persuaded by other members to play live, the band performed their first gig at The Varsity, Wolverhampton on 6th October 2006 and have since played sold out gigs at Wolverhampton's Little Civic, one of which they themselves headlined. They have also supported the likes of Towers of London, The Sunshine Underground John Power and Carter USM
In late December 2006 the band went into the studio for the first time to record the songs The Living Daylights, Shirley Brown and The Cowards Are Going To War. Prior to this, six Cowards songs had been available as live recordings which were made at the band's first gig without their knowledge. However, the existence of these early live tracks had helped to get the band some local attention which meant that when the band played 'The Glory Gig 2' on the day they had finished their official recordings, most of the crowd already knew a number of the songs.
In early 2007, The Cowards headlined a sold out Little Civic and played gigs around venues in the Midlands, as well as playing at number of private parties and functions. In summer 2007 they played the Birmingham student festival Pritchattsbury. Soon after, they recorded a two song acoustic demo at Scott Milner (of The Fight)'s home, which has now become affectionately known as 'The Scooting Milverton Sessions'.
In September 2007, the Cowards returned to the studio to record their second full band demo. The demo, entitled 'Ballads Of The Cowards' included four tracks; 'The Light', 'The Ballad Of The Cowards', 'Hand Me Down My Bible' and 'Talk Of The Town.'
In 2008, the Cowards were featured on local radio sessions and a feature and gig review was included in local newspaper 'The Chronicle' (which can now be seen in the 'Pictures' section).
