I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. My first show was on Grayson
County Day at Fountain Ferry Park in Louisville i was 5 years old my singing
partner was my cousin Deb, i went on to do a couple more years there
winning first place categories. my family members influenced me a lot,my dad
played music in all the the local watering holes known then as beer joints, as
did my uncle's. there were always musicians coming in to our home so i was
always surrounded by them. i remember when i was probably 3 or 4 years old
sneaking into my dads bedroom and pulling out his guitar which he kept under
the bed i'll never forget the smell of that guitar when i opened up the case it
was the vintage smell of wood and steel you just don't forget, this would have
been about 1958.My dads name was Henry Ford Carnes my mom's was Evna
Frances, let me say i love my mother and father dearly, along with all my
brothers and sisters. i got my first guitar when i was eight years old, it was a
Sears&Roebuck sunburst 3/4 size it cost $19 i had a choice between the guitar
and bicycle you know which one i chose. fortunately enough we had more love
then money in those days, but picking up a guitar seemed to be more
important than just about anything.as i got older i started playing guitar with
my dad around the house parties on the week ends, then i started playing gigs
with my friends and cousin. my first band was with Mike Gilliam and my cousin
Dennis. I started sneaking in bars when i was 15 shortly after that my Uncle
Frank hired me to do a gig than my uncle Harvey also gave me a gig playing in
bars i was 16 we didn't tell mom or dad. i left home on the road shortly after
that and went on the road with guys twice my age touring Ohio,West Virginia,
and Louisville,Kentucky, now you want to talk about road experiences wow, we
later ended up in Orlando Fl. in the early seventies, what a
band.ClayJenkins,Richard Lynch,and Gary Reed.thats when i really started
meeting a lot of good pickers and developing my own style,i also started
sharing the stages with a lot of well known musicians, here are there names to
list a few,Johnny Rodrguez, Mel Tillis,Bobby Bare,Gary Morris,Buddy
Emmons,Rudy Vallee,Brad Wolfe,BoxCar Willie,Mark Collie,Del

are you sorry that you didn't make it, and my reply was i have made it, i've
lived my life long dream and still am living it without any regrets, i beat throat
cancer in 2004, and survived a life threating motorcycle accident that left me
with a broken neck, back and trauma to the head, thanks to the will to live and a
lot of good people i'm still pickin and a grinnin,i'm not writing all of this to
impress anyone i just want my loyal fans to have something to remember me
by and there kids to come. i feel like i have a god given talent i have traveled
this country making money and also donating hours and hours doing fund
raisers and benefits for people in need, and believe me there are some really
good people in this world,i've been blessed with a son that is now 24 and is
healthy and strong and doing quite well, i'll be updating this bio from time to
time just to share things with all my friends, family and fans, as time goes by i
hope you check out my fellow musicians that leave there address. also notice
on some of the pictures i have shared there were sometimes when i wasn't
doing so well let me tell you all i'm getting better everyday and meeting some
fantastic people a long the the way, so for now let me say thanks for visiting

Thanks for being my brother and keeping the country music alive in my grandchildren. Trista loves watching CMT and she has the moves and heart to be a country music singer. She loves Taylor Swift, Kellie Pickler, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland, Kristy Lee Cook and of course Hannah Montana. She can watch a video and have the words and moves down in no time, she has her Uncle Chuck's talent. and I thank you for that, I wish we could teach her more.
