NEIL HARRY-Pedal Steel Guitar..... Suspects known to associate with THE OLD BAND are: Adrian Will on Drums, Tommy Larkins on Drums sometimes, Smokin' J Quiros on Guitar sometimes, ROB FRANCIS on Keyboards sometimes, Randy Cochran on either Guitar or Bass sometimes, and others such as Dave Ownbey who would rather not be mentioned..These guys are all here because they aren't all there! - Get Your Own
Influences?! Well... DEAN MARTIN (My Hero and Role Model), AC/DC, Bob Wills, SLIPKNOT, Commander Cody, Stones, and just about anythang anybody pushin' 60 has heard of...My earliest memories of music ('53-'54) was living with my Grandparents (who had a TV!) in Manhattan Beach, California. Grandma loved Liberace, Grandpa liked Spike Jones.... My Mom really dug Elvis and Harry Belafonte in the Fifties, so I heard that a lot as a kid living in Las Vegas ('54-'60). Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, and Little Richard were tearing it up too! .... Then we moved to Del Rio, Texas ('60-'63) where WOLFMAN JACK was broadcasting on XERF outta Ciudad Acuna across the Rio Grande, so I heard a lot of blues, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Bo Diddley, the real shit! Like ZZ TOP says: "I HEARD IT ON THE X" .... Then we moved to Hawthorne, California ('63-'64) where the Beach Boys actually grew up two blocks away and still hung out, so how could you not dig the Beach Boys! The English Invasion started around this time too, so you could get beat up for liking the Beatles in Hawthorne! The first time I heard The Rolling Stones (Not Fade Away), I figured they were one of the Black bands that the Wolfman would play. Then, the first time I saw a photo of The Stones I thought "Hey, they must be surfers with hair like that!", kinda confusing. The Surf bands were huge in SOCAL too, like Dick Dale, The Astronauts (from Colorado Springs?), The Chantays, The Surfaris.... Then we moved to Tucson, Arizona ('64-present) where the English Invasion was really getting strong so I decided to become a Beatle! I hooked up with some like-minded classmates and started a band covering The Beatles, Stones, Dave Clark Five, Herman's Hermits, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Them, and such. We wore matching suits and ties until ... we opened a show for THE SPIDERS (from Phoenix who morphed into ALICE COOPER). I quit the cutesy "beatle" band and started the first ever Spiders tribute band and played what they were playing at the time, which included a lot of Yardbirds! We opened another half dozen or so shows for THE SPIDERS (I'm sure they were amused and repulsed by our cheap imitation) until they moved to L.A. to make it big. We were also doing our Spiders schtick at the same coffee house that the STONE PONIES were playing, until they moved to L.A. to make it big (that Ronstadt chick really made it big!). ....So, we're up to the late '60 now. We're signed to CAPITOL RECORDS, and gotta single out that skyrocketed to 192 on the Billboard Top 200, and contribute two songs to the HELL"S ANGELS '69 movie soundtrack. We're playing L.A. now and then (Whiskey A Go Go, Gazarri's) when one night we go to The Whiskey to see whoever happened to be there. Who happened to be there was this odd band with three, yes count 'em, three lead singers with a stupid name, Three Dog Night! THAT did it! We added two more lead singers and did the first Three Dog Night tribute band! ....Then Led Zeppelin hit it huge! So, about this time, I figure to hell with it!! I'll never be able to sing like this Robert Plant freak so what else is there? Around the early to mid '70s I tuned into the Country-Rock thing. Ya know, Commander Cody, New Riders, Pure Prairie League, Marshal Tucker. OK! Country can be cool, and ya don't have to get castrated to sing like these people...I'm in!... And Here I am! Let me share a quote with you.... "THE MUSIC BUSINESS IS A CRUEL AND SHALLOW MONEY TRENCH, A LONG PLASTIC HALLWAY WHERE THIEVES AND PIMPS RUN FREE, AND GOOD MEN DIE LIKE DOGS. THERE'S ALSO A NEGATIVE SIDE." Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005)
Sounds Like
Well....It depends on how much you've had to drink! Sometimes it sounds like COMMANDER CODY on a bad night.......or The NEW RIDERS on steroids....JIMMY BUFFET drunk on margaritas....ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL (but more asleep)...The Stones stoned...a cheap imitation of JOHNNY CASH, ROY ORBISON, DAVID ALLEN COE or WILLIE ...or LITTLE DICKY AND THE GELDINGS...or THE BEACH BOYS (for one song)...and for at least 30 seconds: AC/DC..... There's been some folks that say we sound like two cats and a pair of boots in a clothes dryer...... We only can play in the key of D, but it always sounds like L ....One old lady, who was even older than us, said we sounded worse than a freight train going through your bedroom at 90 miles an hour with the horn blaring at 3:00 A.M. (I think it was the drummers Mom and she was sober) ...... recently we all actually ended a song all together, but that was just because the club owner shut off the power ...it's true to say that the more you drink, the better we sound (at least that's the only way we can stand it)!... We know about 4 songs and fake the other 6..... We have a rehearsal every Sunday morning at 5:00 A.M before church, but nobody ever shows up (for rehearsal or church!).....our equipment is so old that it's now too valuable to use , so we borrow everythang...REVERB NATION ranked us as the 9th band out of the 3 bands in Arivaca, Az.!!! Beat That!!!
After several years of playing in Rock bands, on a three state club circuit, Chuck Maultsby and Scott Bish started up a band in 1977 which was named CHUCK WAGON AND THE WHEELS as a total joke and started playing on Monday nights at the then popular Country Swing Dancing stronghold, THE STUMBLE INN, in Tucson, Arizona. A low budget self titled LP was relased in 1978 which garnered just enough attention to inspire a second LP mostly on the strength of a silly-ass toon called MY GIRL PASSED OUT IN HER FOOD (KFAT radio in Gilroy, California was the source of most of this inspiration). A second LP was released in 1979 which included a toon called DISCO SUCKS (Parts 1 & 2) which was the perfect toon considering the anti-disco backlash at the time. Disco Sucks blew up big time world wide only to flame out shortly thereafter because of the Comisky Park Baseball riot in Chicago (see the whole story of DISCO SUCKS at the website: www.chuckmaultsby.net). Three more LPs were released but none ever achieved the success (however fleeting) of the COUNTRY SWINGS, DISCO SUCKS LP. The moniker, CHUCK WAGON AND THE WHEELS, was sold in 1998 to a Nashville band who charted a toon in 1999 called BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEER HOLDER. So there is some confusion now days as to whom, what and where the "real" CHUCK WAGON AND THE WHEELS is....which is a source of amusement! Visit the website at: www.chuckmaultsby.net for details, music, videos, photo galleries and INFORMATION ON THE TWO CDs: "THE BEST and/or WORST OF CHUCK MAULTSBY AND HIS OLD BAND" and "CHUCK "WAGON" MAULTSBY- "24 ORIGINALS".... both can be ordered from the site or through CDBABY.COM ... These CDs are collections of songs from the five studio albums, released on Wagon Tracks Records under the name CHUCK WAGON AND THE WHEELS between 1978 and 1982... Stop in for a visit to the website and enjoy! ..
