   About CATALPA

Catalpa Band Details
Myspace Layouts
Catalpa is made up of Ciaran Warfield who plays 5 string banjo and guitar. Stephen Heneghan is from Leixlip and has been gigging since the age of 12 he plays guitar and is the main vocalist and Claire Sherry from Dublin who plays whistle, mandolin and fiddle and has They have between them toured Australia, Scotland, USA, Spain and of course Ireland. They have played to in excess of 2,000 people supporting The Wolfetone's at the famous Glasgow venue 'The Barrowlands' (see pics on site ). They got their name from the story of 'The Catalpa' Whaling Ship from New Bedford, Massachussets. The ship was involved in one of the greatest prison breaks in history. For those of you not already familiar with the story, here’s a quick run-down. In 19th-century England, a group of Irish-born British soldiers were found to have been secretly plotting rebellion. Convicted of treason, they were transported to Fremantle prison on the last convict ship sent to Australia while one of the civilian Fenians involved in the scheme, John Devoy, the man responsible for recruiting the soldiers to the Irish cause, had been granted amnesty and exiled. Devoy, obviously spurred on by more than a little guilt after receiving a letter from one of his less fortunate brothers in Fremantle, devised a plot to free them with the help of the recently formed Fenian movement Clan na Gael. The plan involved buying an American ship, 'The Catalpa', and disguising it as a whaler. An American captain was hired and two years after the scheme was first hatched, and presumably after considerable persuasion, captain Anthony set off from America for Fremantle to rescue the prisoners with the help of an undercover Fenian “agent” in Australia. After a series of close calls in Fremantle, a suspenseful sea chase and a cleverly executed bluff by the Catalpa’s captain, the men eventually escaped to the safety of the United States. They play a mix of their own songs, traditional Irish ballads and their own version of more contemporary Irish songs. In January they recorded their own album which includes all their own songs.. A special mention must go to Rohan at the Great Wall Studios for a brilliant job and also to his Dad David who was inspirational.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Dear CATALPA,

Every time that we listen & write music... play an instrument... sing & dance... act in a play... or work in some audio/image/video engineering process... something is healing inside...

When we share it with friends... something is healing all over...

Love can drive... in a simple way... everything

We are connected

Estimada/o CATALPA,

Estamos conectados...
