About me:
When on a microphone in my early days my favorite saying was “Is Everybody Happy ? ’It became my signature and I had a favorite saying that somehow years later I have discovered I have lived up to it perfectly.
It was “If it’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind, it a drag queens prerogative to exaggerate! Well I’m not sure what’s fact what’s fiction but I’m going to try and remember my journey,as I see it anyway, here goes!.
I came to Sydney from Melbourne in 1979 and became one of the many young drag addicts to work at “Patchs” Nightclub(now DCM) on Oxford st Darlinghurst.
I would watch Trixie Lamont do Blondie’s ‘Heart of Glass’ with a bottle of amyl up my nose and believe the vision I was witnessing was the ultimate.
As a dare I entered the talent quest and to this day unsure of how I ended up getting fulltime work. I know I didn’t win or come 2nd or 3rd but the mystery was born and I called myself Barbara Mattel (Barbie for short).
The song I performed was Sonny and Cher’s Phill Spector song ‘A Love Like Yours Don’t Keep Knocking Everyday’
Once on stage I felt like I had been there before, and my world became my stage for evermore. So through the 80’s I performed with some brilliant performers and found inspirations and good friends some living some past.
Trixie Lamont in the 80’s was the queen of the mike, and her blasphemous style of obuse rubbed off on me.
In the early part of the A.I.D.S. crisis I believe the microphone was my personal way of unleashing my anger towards the hideous disease.I felt like
An Andrew sister felt doing shows during war time.
I worked at The Albury Hotel for many years forming a group called ‘The Showbags’ consisting of Miss 3D,Twisty(who later became Pat Gently) and numerous other showbag fill ins like Kandy Conrad and Sara Pax.
I also formed other groups at various pubs and clubs like Standed Nightclub.Where I worked with Channelle Saint Laurent and Christina.we were called ‘The 3C’s’
I have a confession Christina(now Angel Andrews)was the first drag queen to do Xanadu. At the end of the number she span so fast and lifted a huge white crimplene circle skirt and revealed her newly aquired sex change and did the splits !. Heaven.
It was at Standed where I met my alter ego/my guru my inspiration for I had seen him some years earlier in a production of Lindsay Kemp’s Flowers’.And as soon as I saw him I knew my destiny in life. His name was Michael Matou, and he still to this day was the master of tragic comedy relief. He made me cry until I laughed, a mime artist if you will.
I worked at The Exchange Hotel with a group called ‘Mixed Company’ with Julie Ashton,Ginger Benson and Polly Petrie as our male dancer. When Ginger and Polly left the show they were replaced by Theresa Green and Chris Debonnafin. We traveled to Canberra and Woolongong and were the first drag queens now famous photographer Eric Manokuv took photos of.We later got front cover of Photoworld with photo of moi.
I was huge in the 80’s (apparently) and started doing shows at the Hordern Pavillion for Mardi Gras,Sleaze Ball,Bachanalia,Rat,and Sweatbox partys.
I have many favorite performances but two stand out among the fog and stardust. They being Mardi Gras 1994 in a cherry picker doing ‘Always On My Mind’ Sleaze 1990 ‘Better the Devil You Know’
I traveled to New Zealand doing”In Bed with Cindy’ and Shanghai twice with 3D ,Benina Bod and Cora Beth and oscar winning costume designer Tim Chappel.
I have worked wit Bob Downe at The Belvoir st theatre and Kinsellas and did promotions on Good Morning Sydney with Joanne McGuiness.Daytime drag TV morning style.
I re opened Ruby Reds (famous lesbian bar) with my own very popular night called ‘Pastels’ on Sunday nights.
I was the first drag queen to perform at ‘The Opera House’ when I played Moth in Ricahrd Wherrets production of ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’ and a dream it was.I sang I danced I acted,I was an actor not just a drag queen working in a pub.
I won Diva entertainer of the year twice, I think the only person to achieve this.
I have been in several films,’Everlasting Secret Family’, ‘Desire’,’Hand Job’ and Gone Tomorrow.
Then Priscilla came into my life and suddenly my somewhat secretive lifestyle became world known.I travelled to London and The Canne film festival to promote Priscilla and film the doco ‘Ladies Please’ with my son Adam and my good friend Strykermyer. We sat next to Liz Hurley unaware of who she was, then we saw her in that gold pin dress.
I performed in front of Hugo Weaving who cried, which said it all.For words need not be spoken.
I sat in the silver shoe on top of the Priscilla bus in the closing ceremony of the 2000 olympics. And shared a lift backstage with Kylie,Elle,Jimmy Barnes and Paul Hogan,oh! yes and Vanessa Wagner.
The Olympics –drama was the ultimate in my life.Yes I prayed to be in that shoe, and god granted me my wish.Regardless of what any other drag queen thought, I was the one holding the baby after all.I had been away from Sydney for many years and I came back to sit on that throne like a good drag queen deserves too.
I have been back in Sydney for I year and have worked at The Newtown,The Flinders,Mr Marys and Arq.I have done Toybox and Homesexual parties and currently doing special guest spots at Stonewall in ‘Pollies Follies’.
In one year I have done a lot,but in my almost 30 years as a performer I have done a hell of a lot more. And of my new age –50 I’m still here and still exaggerating like theres no tomorrow.
I will never forget yesterdays
Legs Galore -Tallulah Brite-Fanny Farquar-
Edna Vickeridge-Kandy Konrad-Lana Turnip
Flange Desire-Julie Ashton-Lorraine Campbell Craig-
Michael Matou-Simon Reptile- Doris Fish-Brendon Heath-Kerr
And many others who give me the strength to continue doing this magical lifestyle called- DRAG
Some years back we were asked to help launch Mardi Gras - the theme being "We are family". All different types of families held a colour ribbon representing the rainbow.
We chose Blue as it was Adams favorite colour. I wore a suit and looked like the the proud father I had become and we all danced together. Fast forward a year or two and I read BISEXUALS are not allowed to attend the dance party....Instead of going through the turnstile gates I jumped over as I was pretrefied I would hear that dreadful "click" sound preventing me from entering. I danced alone that night like I never danced before. Some months back after working at Polly's Follies I struggled through the crowd with a large Drag Bag and was stopped by a young guy who said..."I just don't get it"... "Get what?" i replied.."Well your not even gay" "No Luv, Just a slut!" I responded and picked up my bag and left, later I thought, what I should have said is...I don't read labels, if it feels good, I'll buy it? Perhaps not! I believe loving both is better than not loving at all.
I am much like my favorite scene in Priscilla, where Hugo Weaving is pretending to be butch and spits and when I'm down i flash to that and I SMILE, I CRY and I KEEP ON DANCING...
