Following a roaring opening weekend with rave reviews from the media and a swarm of positive online buzz, Cirque Berzerk, LA’s sexy, gothic circus extravaganza, is extending its downtown run through the summer.
Stylistically, Cirque Berzerk is a bit grungier and more sinister than a typical circus. The 35-member troupe is a tight knit family of performers who put a dark spin on contemporary circus theater resulting in the sort of spectacle that Tim Burton would dream up if he joined the circus. "Beneath," the production's theme, tells the story of a misunderstood girl who gets lured into the cabaret of the underworld through the art of acrobats, aerialists, contortionists, cabaret dancers, punk rock clowns, fire dancers, and psychedelic vaudvillian tomfoolerists.
Cirque Berzerk offers four shows per weekend including one performance on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:30pm, and one show on Sundays at 8:00pm.
”Make no mistake – it’s not a traditional circus. It’s a home-grown interpretation of vaudevillian traditions, mixed with burlesque showmanship, sprinkled with a little punk rock!” – KABC, June 18, 2009
“This is no ordinary circus, but one born of the subcultures of the past two decades. It's a post-rave, post-goth spectacle both in sound and appearance." - LA Weekly, June 19, 2009
"The show is wildly entertaining and at times astounding. There is much laughter but, more often than not, I found myself lifting my jaw from the floor, where it had fallen in astonishment. By the end of the show I wanted nothing more than to run away with the circus." - LA Metblogs, June 22, 2009
We attended our second show last night... I have to tell you guys, any piece of art that makes you feel better than any drug does, while you are completely sober is extraterrestrial... The story, the performers, the MUSIC (I love the music!), the art, the entire cabaret... Freaking fantabulous!!! Thank you for being so entertaining and thought provoking! Blessings...
